Patent number: 8082658Abstract: Methods of lapping rows of recording heads are described after an air bearing surface (ABS) damascene process is performed. The ABS damascene process uses a selective etching process to form voids in the row of recording heads where conductive material forms a feature in the recording head, such as a wrap around shield. The conductive material is then deposited on the ABS of the row to fill the voids, and the row is lapped. According to methods provided herein, the resistance of one or more lapping guides in the row of recording heads is monitored to determine when the conductive material is removed by the lapping process. When the monitored resistance indicates that the conductive material is removed, the lapping process is stopped. The resistance across one or more lapping guides may also be used to control the lapping process to uniformly lap the conductive material from the ABS.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2008Date of Patent: December 27, 2011Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands, B.V.Inventors: Thomas D. Patent number: 7398590Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing low-density gas-filled disk drives involving test equipment utilized to determine gas leaks occurring in disk drives subjected to shock and vibration events. A disk drive is placed in a sealed container, which, in turn, is connected to a gas detection device. Following shock or vibration testing, the gas detection device determines if a leak has occurred, as well as the quality of gas leaked from the disk drive. The present invention also involves a test apparatus designed to check the accuracy and calibration of associated gas detection devices used during the shock and vibration tests. The test apparatus utilizes a sealed test chamber containing a known quantity of gas, which is released during a test event. Knowing the quantity of gas released, the output of the gas detection device can be monitored and calibrated as needed.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2004Date of Patent: July 15, 2008Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Kimberly C. Patent number: 7371488Abstract: Provided is a method of manufacturing a magnetic head with which bonding of a slider and a suspension can be performed by taking an ABS pattern, which determines flying characteristics, as a reference, with no special fabrication required on the slider or the suspension. The method relates to a method of manufacturing a magnetic head for attaching a slider, on which an air bearing surface (ABS) is formed, to a suspension. A surface of the slider on which the ABS is formed is photographed, and the ABS and an engraved region formed within the ABS are identified from the photographed image. Then, a reference that serves as a guide in attaching the suspension is computed, and the slider is attached to the suspension based on the reference. It thus becomes possible for positive pressure and negative pressure that occur in the ABS to be well balanced centered about the suspension, making it possible to stabilize flying attitude and electrical characteristics.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2004Date of Patent: May 13, 2008Assignees: TDK Corporation, SAE Magnetics (H.K.) Patent number: 7369361Abstract: A method of manufacturing magnetic heads comprises the step of: fabricating a magnetic head substructure by forming components of a plurality of magnetic heads on a single substrate, wherein a plurality of rows of pre-head portions that will be the respective magnetic heads later are aligned in the substructure; and fabricating the magnetic heads by separating the pre-head portions from one another through cutting the substructure. In the substructure first resistor elements and second resistor elements are formed. Each of the first resistor elements has a resistance that varies depending on the location of an end of an MR element located in a medium facing surface along the direction orthogonal to the medium facing surface. Each of the second resistor elements has a resistance that varies depending on the location of an end face of a track width defining portion located in the medium facing surface along the direction orthogonal to the medium facing surface.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2005Date of Patent: May 6, 2008Assignee: Headway Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Yoshitaka Sasaki, Hiroyuki Itoh, Dong-Hong Li, Hironori Araki, Kazuo Ishizaki

Patent number: 7308752Abstract: An optical pickup apparatus is described which includes a movable unit with an objective lens, a focus servo coil for moving the moveable unit containing the objective lens in the optical-axis direction, and tracking servo coils for moving the moveable unit containing the objective lens in the horizontal directions, and a liquid crystal element disposed for correcting the refractive index. Springs simultaneously provide support for the moveable unit and feed power to the liquid crystal element, the focus servo coil, and the tracking servo coils. A method for making said optical pickup apparatus is described. Two sheets, each having four springs extending across an opening formed by punching, are disposed parallel to each other at a predetermined distance. Patent number: 7287313Abstract: A method is provided for preserving the transverse biasing of a GMR (or MR) read head during back-end processing. In a first preferred embodiment, the method comprises magnetizing the longitudinal biasing layers of the read head in a transverse direction, so that the resulting field at the position of the transverse biasing layer places it in a minimum of potential energy which stabilizes its direction. The field of the longitudinal biasing layer is then reset to the longitudinal direction in a manner which maintains the transverse biasing direction. In a second embodiment, a novel fixture for mounting the read head during processing includes a magnetic portion which stabilizes the transverse bias of the read head. The two methods may be used singly or in combination.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2005Date of Patent: October 30, 2007Assignee: Headway Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Yimin Guo, Li-Yan Zhu
