Abstract: Production of microscopic and nanoscopic coils, by rolling up conductor layers during the removal of auxiliary layers from a substrate. By removing the auxiliary layer from the substrate, for example by virtue of a sacrificial layer situated in between being selectively etched away, the auxiliary layer folds back and, if appropriate, automatically rolls up upon continuation of the removal operation and a conductor track concomitantly rolls up in the process. The auxiliary layer may be formed by two layers having different lattice constants. It is possible to produce microcoils, microtransformers, or microcapacitors constructed from said microcoils, with diameters in the nanometers or micrometers range.

Abstract: A device and method for use as an adjunct in assuring that a manufactured wire is substantially free of internal flaws. A plurality of successively adjacent wire bending stations are provided, where each station includes means for bending the wire into bending planes which are different for each of the stations. The wire is passed through the successive stations, whereby the different bending planes at each station subject the wire at each station to tensile bending strain at portions of the wire cross-section which are different for each station. As a result the probability is increased that a given internal flaw in the wire will be exposed to the tensile bending strain condition as the wire passes through the successive stations, increasing likelihood of breakage of the wire at the flaw or of flaw magnification to improve detection of the flaw during subsequent wire inspections.

The substrate segments are respectively provided with circuit patterns on its one side and electrodes on the other side. Sets of IC devices including bobbins are mounted on the sides with the circuit patterns of the respective substrates. A conductor is wound around the bobbins successively to form the windings. Portions of the conductor extending between the adjacent windings are pressed against and connected to the circuit patterns to form leading and trailing ends of the windings connected to the circuit patterns. Thereafter, the substrate is severed to provide surface-mount coil packages each comprising the circuit board and the set of IC devices including the coil.
