  • Patent number: 5628108
Abstract: A wire transferring assembly for a wire harness assembly machine has two adjoining termination stations. First connector elements are advanced in a reciprocating nest from a supply of connector elements into contact with wires extending from a positioning head and terminated thereto. After termination, to the wires, the connector elements are drawn away in the nest from the wire feed source and the wires are cut at their ends opposite the first connector elements. The cut wires are clamped onto a moveable clamping head and maintained in a preselected order while they are transferred to a second termination location, where a row of second connector elements are advanced into contact with the wire ends and terminated thereto.

Abstract: A substrate transport path adjustment apparatus allows adjustment of the transport path of a substrate by placing a magazine between regulating members for regulating the position of the magazine provided roughly in a straight line with respect to guide members which guide a substrate along a prescribed path. The magazine is positioned with respect to the prescribed path by moving both regulating members in synchronization in the same direction after the regulating members engage the magazine by approaching each other. The substrate is pushed out from the magazine to bring the substrate between the guide members, and the guide members are driven to approach the substrate. Both guide members are moved in synchronization in the same direction to position the substrate with respect to the prescribed path.

  • Patent number: 5487580
Abstract: A chuck unit for automatically inserting a workpiece in a receiving portion, which comprises a fixed pawl, first and second movable pawls and a pusher. Both major surfaces of the workpiece are chucked by a first vertical surface of the fixed pawl and the first movable pawl, and both side edges of the workpiece are chucked by a second vertical surface of the fixed pawl being perpendicular to the first vertical surface and the second movable pawl. The pusher is vertically movable between the first vertical surface and the first movable pawl for downwardly extruding the workpiece. Since two major surfaces and two side edges of the workpiece are held by the pawls, the attitude and position of the workpiece are corrected therein. Therefore, this chuck unit is suitable for assembling a plurality of workpieces which are arranged in a thickness direction thereof in an aligned manner.

Abstract: An assembly station that loads heads onto a disk of a hard disk drive and allows a crash stop to be mounted to the drive unit. The assembly station includes a load arm positioner which can slide along an annular ring. Mounted to the load arm positioner is a scissor assembly tool which can engage and separate the actuator arms. The load arm positioner can be moved about the annular ring so that the scissors engage the actuator arms and load the heads onto the disk. The pivot point of the actuator arms is located at the center of the annular ring so that there is no relative movement between the scissor tool and the actuator arms when the heads are loaded onto the disk.

  • Patent number: 5457876
Abstract: A tool is disclosed for terminating conductors of a cable to insulation displacement contacts of terminals that are partially assembled to a connector housing. After termination of all of the terminals the assembly is removed from the tool and the entire strip of terminals is fully inserted into the connector housing and the carrier strip removed and discarded. The tool includes an insertion blade attached to a reciprocating ram for effecting the termination and a terminal strip feed mechanism. A comb mechanism is coupled to the insertion blade and interacts with camming surfaces fixed to the frame to engage and align the conductor between the insertion blade and the terminal by means of a combing action. The comb mechanism engages the conductor at a point away from the end thereof and then moves toward the end thereby moving the conductor into the desired alignment.

  • Patent number: 5446960
Abstract: An alignment apparatus and method that provides a pick and placement tool that picks matrix leaded modules from trays, places the modules into a self-aligning nest, picks the modules from the nest and places them on a printed circuit board. The specific location and orientation of the nest with respect to a printed circuit board is known by the pick and placement tool. Once the nest has aligned the module, the tool picks the module from the nest and places it in the appropriate location on the printed circuit board. The nest has sloped sides that angle toward that bottom and are slippery. These sides funnel the module toward the bottom of the nest and correct gross misalignment. At the bottom inside of the nest are locating features into which the leads of the module fit. Between the locating features are slip surfaces so that the module leads slide into the locating features, correcting fine misalignment.

Abstract: A machine (50) is disclosed that assembles an electrical connector (10) to the edge (18) of a printed circuit board (12). The machine incorporates an actuating mechanism that requires only a single input motion to achieve a Variety of functional motions within the machine. The machine includes a carriage assembly (54) that moves substantially vertically within the frame of the machine to sense the thickness of the circuit board and then to align the centerline of the connector held on fixture (280) with the exact center plane (44) of the board. A slide member (140) then moves toward the connector, causing a pair of comb members (252, 254) to close into position in front of the moving connector. The solder tails (38,40) of the connector (10) then enter spaced slots (260) in the edges of the comb members for support and the connector housing engages the face (272) of the combs, pushing them toward the circuit board.

Abstract: At least first and second adjacent parts supply tables of a parts supply apparatus are controlled so as to avoid unnecessary movement of a one of the parts supply tables not being used in successive parts supply operations, while at the same time, ensuring that the parts supply tables are sufficiently close to one another at the time of switching over between the parts supply tables to thereby reduce the duration of the switching operation. Alternately, the two parts supply tables are moved together from one position to another to maintain an interval therebetween which allows for a rapid switch-over between the parts supply tables when necessary. However, the rate at which the parts supply table in use is moved is greater than the rate at which the parts supply table not in use is moved, whereby the two parts supply tables come to a rest at different times to thereby reduce impact vibrations.

Abstract: A pick and place device for populating a circuit board is operated manually. One or more pickup heads in a carriage is lowered to engage a component by vacuum, raised for carrying the component to a desired position over the circuit board and lowered to set the component. The component can be rotated, and the vacuum is operated automatically during pick and place movements, accomplished with one hand via a rotatable handle arrangement. A hand rest places the user's fingers in range of the handle and assists in coarse positioning of the carriage. The handle and hand rest are mountable on opposite lateral sides of the carriage head assembly. Finger controlled fine positioning guides also support the carriage for movement relative to the coarse guide. Coarse guidance is by a telescoping arm and lateral rail or the like. Fine guidance is by a short span two-axis slide block coupling the carriage to the telescoping arm. The handle lifts or lowers a control plate and is coupled to convey rotation.
