Abstract: Durable pumps for abrasives are provided. In one implementation, an example centrifugal pump or pump stage for subsurface operation has a thrust washer located inside the circumference of a close-fitting clearance seal between an impeller shroud and the diffuser. The relocation of the thrust washer allows the clearance seal to protect the thrust washer from abrasives while the thrust washer supports the impeller against the reaction forces of axial fluid flow. In one implementation, the radius or size of a thrust washer or other seal-like feature is reduced in order to increase exposure of the bottom impeller shroud to pressured fluid, thus balancing pressure at the top and bottom of the impeller to decrease friction between the impeller and the thrust washer. Reducing the radius of the thrust washer also reduces surface area of the washer subject to friction and reduces the moment arm of a braking torque on the rotating impeller, thereby reducing power loss in the pump.

At least a pair of spaced sealing rings project from an annular surface of the bearing housing into corresponding annular recesses formed on the shaft. Abstract: A turbocharger has a sealing arrangement between the turbocharger shaft and the bearing housing adjacent to the turbine and/or the compressor housings to restrict leaking of gas into the bearing housing. At least a pair of spaced sealing rings project from an annular surface of the bearing housing into corresponding annular recesses formed on the shaft. The trailing face of the second ring or the opposite surface of the recess has a plurality of radial grooves that define leak passages that serve to maintain a very small flow of gas from the turbine or compressor housing into the bearing housing. Alternatively there is a slot in the second ring to provide the leak passage. This ensures that there is a minimum gas flow so that a large pressure gradient is not applied across the second seal thereby avoiding wear, overheating and collapse of the ring.

Abstract: A fan containment casing includes a core comprising a number of tows. The core has a central region and two end regions. The tows are grouped into a number of bands and form a number of filament-wound radially disposed layers. The bands of tows are interleaved as a number of direct bands and indirect bands along at least a portion of one or more of the layers. A method of forming a fan containment casing includes winding a number of tows on a liner to form a number of radially disposed layers, where each of the layers is continuously connected to at least one adjacent one of the layers across one of the end regions via at least one of the tows.

Abstract: A method for forming an impeller for a pump provides a reliable protective barrier that prevents or eliminates the ingress of pumped fluid that might otherwise attack the magnetic assembly of the impeller. An inner barrier is hermetically connected to an internal impeller section at one or more seams to cover at least part of a first magnetic assembly. Filler is introduced into a spatial volume of the first magnet assembly associated with the internal impeller section. The remainder of an impeller is molded over or in association with the internal impeller section to form the impeller with the inner barrier and an outer barrier overlying the inner barrier for protection of the first magnet assembly from the pumped fluid.
