Connecting Rod Making Patents (Class 29/888.09)
  • Patent number: 11376662
Abstract: A method includes powder forging and machining a workpiece that is fractured to divide the workpiece into separate components. In a green form in which the workpiece is formed of compacted powdered metal and has a body that is generally shaped as a parallelepiped with a pair of end faces. The body defines a bore, a pair of V-notches and a pair of channels. The V-notches are formed into the bore parallel to the central axis of the bore and cooperate to define a separation plane. Each of the channels is formed in an associated one of the end faces at a location where the separation plane intersects the end face. During forging, the channels are closed but create a stress riser that aids in directing the fracture when the components are separated from one another.

In accordance with the invention, a masking agent (M) is disposed perpendicularly with respect to a separating line (10) on the bearing seat surface (7) during a coating process for applying the bearing layer (6) in order to form a coating-free region, such that a recess (9) at a predetermined width (B) is produced in the bearing layer (6). The masking agent (M) is formed as an element which is separate from the bearing component (1) and is not connected thereto.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a connecting rod assembly including the steps of defining a small end of a connecting rod assembly having a terminal end and then defining a pin bore extending through the small end of the connecting rod assembly. A pair of channels is formed on opposite sides of the small end of the connecting rod assembly wherein the axis of each of the channels is substantially perpendicular to the axis of the pin bore. At least partially annular grooves are formed within the pin bore adjacent the distal end of the pin bore. The connecting rod assembly is then machined to reduce the width of the small end between each channel and the terminal end to provide a small end having a reduced width configuration wherein the grooves are disposed along at least a portion of the distal end to reduce the need to deburr the area adjacent the pin bore.

The large end part of the connecting rod is placed on the step part of a pedestal, and the small end part thereof is placed on a pedestal formed of a vibration damping material. An air vibrator is energized to continuously supply compressed air to vibrate the large end part together with the pedestal until the vibrated large end part is brought into contact with a contact plate member.
