Ferrule Making Or Reforming Patents (Class 29/890.15)
  • Patent number: 11333273
Abstract: A hybrid fluid-flow assembly having a base fitting that has been formed by axial load bulge forming from a sheet of metal, and a custom fitting that has been machined from a shaped-memory alloy. At least one connection port of the custom fitting is connected to at least one connection port of the base fitting by an interference fit. The interference fit is formed by cooling the custom fitting to a temperature below its transition temperature, deforming the custom fitting so that the diameter of its connection port is slightly larger than the connection port on the base fitting, installing the connection port of the custom fitting on the connection port of the base fitting, and allowing the custom fitting to warm to room temperature. The shaped-memory alloy swages and coins the outer surface of the base fitting at the interface of the ports, thereby forming a compressive, interference fit.

  • Publication number: 20080111369
Abstract: A tubular crimp connector is provided for attaching a valve assembly or the like to a metal pipe, a fluid tight mechanically secure manner. The connector includes a tubular section made of a metal alloy defining an axial bore sized to receive the pipe with an interior circumferential sealing surface and a plurality of integrally formed annularly spaced apart teeth oriented between the sealing surface and the connector distal end. The wall thickness of the connector in the region of the spaced apart teeth is sufficiently thin to be radially, plastically, permanently deformable by a crimping tool. It is sufficiently thick to provide a mechanically secure interconnection between the tubular connector and the metal pipe without requiring a reinforcing ferrule. The method of forming is provided in which a preform is hot forged and finish machined to the final shape.

  • Patent number: 6792786
Abstract: A fabrication method of a metal shell to be installed on a park plug is provided which is made up of a small-diameter portion, a large-diameter portion, and a wrapping portion. The wrapping portion is to be wrapped by staking about the spark plug to achieve installation of the metal shell on the spark plug. The method comprises pressing a workpiece with a punch to shape the wrapping portion of the metal shell in a first cold forging process and processing the workpiece to shape the small-diameter portion of the metal shell in a second cold forging process different from the first cold forging process. This produces the metal shell which is less susceptible to cracks when installed on the spark plug and has an increased service life.

  • Patent number: 6644083
Abstract: A cylindrical workpiece (20) is mounted onto and connected to a mandrel (14) that is itself mounted for rotation about a vertical axis (12). A first end portion of the workpiece (20) is housed within the mandrel (14). A second end portion projects axially outwardly beyond a radial forming surface (60) on the mandrel (14). A first forming roller (30) is mounted on a swing post (52) that is positioned by an adjustable length strut (56). The strut (56) is elongated to swing the post (52) downwardly and place the roller (30) inside the second end portion of the workpiece (20). Then, a lead screw (28) is used for pulling on a base (50) that supports the post (52). This pulls a convex face portion (32) of the roller (30) against the inside of the second end portion of the workpiece (20). Lead screw operation moves the roller (30), causing it to stretch the second end portion of the workpiece (20) and move it up onto and then move it radially outwardly along the forming surface (60).
