Publication number: 20130341960Abstract: Pickup truck bed tonneau covers and varieties thereof are manufactured using universal components. An outer frame is made from rails cut from universal rail stock. Universal, adjustable corner brackets can be fixed into a desired position to accommodate all different angles at the corners of the tonneau cover. Intermediate cross car rails are cut from universal rail stock and all are coupled to the outer frame via universal intermediate rail brackets. Opposing pairs of universal hinge brackets are used for all hinges of the tonneau cover. Thus, the tooling required to make a variety of tonneau covers is greatly reduced. An elongated step is adjacent to, and protrudes downwardly beyond, a seal coupling channel with a compressible seal extends along the outer frame. The downwardly protruding elongated step member acts as a continuous elongated stop, limiting compression of the seal member.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 29, 2012Publication date: December 26, 2013Applicant: Specialty Vehicle Acquisition CorporationInventor: Bradley R. Publication number: 20100276964Abstract: The removable enclosure for the rear of a vehicle provides additional storage space or cover for the open rear end of a vehicle, such as an open tailgate of a pickup truck or the open hatch of an SUV. The removable enclosure includes a housing having at least one sidewall and an upper wall defining an open lower end and an open front end. An internal frame is disposed within and supports the housing. The internal frame includes at least one elastic cord extending laterally across the housing. A pair of laterally opposed diagonal supports each extend from an upper edge of the front end of the housing to a lower edge of a rear face of the at least one sidewall. The at least one elastic cord is secured to, and extends between, the pair of laterally opposed diagonal supports.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 28, 2010Publication date: November 4, 2010Inventor: Charles R. Publication number: 20100148534Abstract: A tonneau cover system for use in conjunction with a storage bed having an upwardly directed opening. The tonneau cover system includes a frame portion and a cover portion. The frame portion includes a first mounting track, a second mounting track, a first frame member, a second frame member a first hinge mechanism and a second hinge mechanism. The first frame member has a first end and a second end. The second frame member has a first end and a second end. The first hinge mechanism operably attaches the first ends of the first frame member and the second frame member to the first mounting track. The second hinge mechanism operably attaches the second ends of the first frame member and the second frame member to the second mounting track. The cover portion extends over the frame portion.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 11, 2009Publication date: June 17, 2010Applicant: Truxedo, Inc.Inventors: Kelly Kneifl, Michael R. Spencer

Patent number: 7673926Abstract: A relatively lightweight tarping system for use with trailers or other open top containers includes first and second spaced frame members and an elongated flexible member such as a cable or chain connected to and extending therebetween. A tarpaulin may be mounted thereon so that the frame members, flexible member and tarpaulin are pivotable between a covered position atop the open top container and an uncovered position. A four-bar linkage is preferably used in combination with a rotational drive mechanism to provide various advantages in rotating the tarpaulin assembly between the covered and uncovered positions. A width adjustment mechanism is provided to provide usage with trailers or other open top containers of different widths. An improved seal is provided between the tarpaulin and container.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2008Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: Smith Patents, L.L.C.Inventors: Fred P. Smith, Nathan H. Morrill

Publication number: 20100026037Abstract: The invention provides a canopy (10) for an open load carrying vehicle (20), such as a pickup truck. The canopy (10) includes an expandable frame comprising a plurality of frame members (52) which are mountable on a load bed (24) of the vehicle (10) such that the frame members (52) are slidably displaceable relative to the load bed (24) to vary the size of the frame. The frame is operable between a retracted condition on the one hand, and, on the other hand, an expanded condition in which the frame extends from a front of the load bed (24) to its rear. A canvas covering (50) is positioned over the frame members (52), and the canopy (10) includes a powered drive means which is drivingly connected to the frame for powered displacement of the frame between its contracted condition and its expanded condition.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2005Publication date: February 4, 2010Inventor: David Victor Opie

Patent number: 7607714Abstract: A cargo box tonneau system includes a system frame and cover. The tonneau system also includes a bow member supported by the system frame. The bow member is coupled to the cover, and the bow member applies biased tension to the cover in a cross vehicle direction. The tonneau system further includes an elongated member coupled to the cover and a bow member supported by the system frame. The bow member includes a bow channel that receives the elongated member such that the cover is engaged with the bow member. The tonneau system also includes a rear frame rail assembly coupled to the cover and to the system frame at each end to facilitate tailgate movement.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2007Date of Patent: October 27, 2009Inventor: Donald G. Patent number: RE41078Abstract: A tonneau cover is provided that is attached at its most forward end to an adjustable tensioning rail which spans the front end of a pickup truck box. The tensioning rail is adjustably attached at its outside edges to two side rails which are attached to the inside of a pickup box. The adjustable attachment of the tensioning rail to the side rails is accomplished by the use of a tensioning screw and two attachment blocks. As the tensioning screw is moved forwards and backwards by the use of the adjustment knob, the tensioning rail is moved in a corresponding manner. This adjustment is preformed when the tonneau cover is in the open position, and thus, allows a user to obtain the desired amount if tightness when the tonneau cover is subsequently placed in the closed position.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2001Date of Patent: January 19, 2010Inventor: Charles M.
