Pivoted Blade Patents (Class 30/155)
  • Patent number: 5685079
Abstract: A folding knife is disclosed having a unique locking mechanism which prevents the blade from being closed when the knife is in use. The locking mechanism provides a rolling lock carried by the knife mechanism having a lever that is movable between two positions. In an unlocked position, the blade may be rotated between the extended and closed positions. With the lever in the locked position, the blade is held in the extended position. The blade provides a base having a cam surface and a notch in that surface. The rolling lock provides a cylindrical body having a notch. When the rolling lock lever is in the unlocked position and the blade is extended, the notch in the cylindrical body of the rolling lock occupies the same space as the notch in the cam surface of the blade, allowing the cam surface of the base of the blade to rotate through the notch in the rolling lock.

  • Patent number: 5647129
Abstract: A tri-fold knife is provided which has a blade having a tang and bifurcated handle. The handle has a main handle which has a forward end which is pivotably attached to the tang. The main handle terminates in a butt end. A tail handle is provided with a forward engaging end and a butt end coupling which pivotably engages the butt end of the main handle. The main handle is provided with a main handle slot and the tail handle is provided with a tail handle slot which connects with the main handle slot. When the main handle forward end engages the tail handle forward engaging end, a knife handle is formed. When the tail handle is end to end with the main handle, the slots form a sheath into which the knife blade can be pivoted. Preferably, locks are provided to hold the blade with respect to the main handle when the knife is opened and the blade is exposed. A lock is also provided to hold the blade in the closed position where the blade lies in the main handle slot and the tail handle slot.

  • Patent number: 5615484
Abstract: A cam lock for the folding blade of a knife is disclosed herein wherein the heel of the knife is pivotally carried between opposite sides at one end of a handle. The handle includes an elongated slot defined between opposing surfaces of the handle for receiving the blade in its folded or storage position. A self-biasing cam lock assembly having components carried on the heel of the blade and the handle maintains the blade in its operative extended, unfolded position or in its folded storage position. The cam lock assembly includes an L-shaped cam member secured to the blade heel having an arcuate surface terminating at one end in a linear surface and a cut-out at its opposite end. Rectilinear slide members are carried on the handle having a spring bias yieldably urging the pin and slide member into engagement with either the cut-out or the linear surface respectively to maintain the blade in either of its two positions.

  • Patent number: 5572793
Abstract: A locking knife and sheath combination having a knife of unitary construction. A flexible engagement tab is provided on the handle of the knife for engaging with a tab receiving opening provided in a front portion of the sheath. Upon engagement of the tab with such opening, the knife is securely retained in the sheath. Removal of the knife from the sheath is accomplished by depression of the tab through the tab opening of the sheath. Sheath clamping means are also provided on the opposite side of the sheath and include a clamping arm which pivots with respect to the rearward surface of the sheath through means of rotation of a thumbwheel adjustment member. • Patent number: 5515610
Abstract: A folding knife has a generally elongate blade having a tang portion formed with an integral normally unstressed cantilever spring. A cam pin is provided within the blade receiving space within the handle which is disposed along a curvilinear path defined by a locus of points traveled by a free end of the spring as the blade pivots from the closed to the open positions. The cam pin serves to engage and obstruct the free end of the spring between a first point on the curvilinear path when the blade approaches the open position and a second point on that path when the blade reaches the fully open position. The spring, while obstructed is deflected by the cam pin toward the blade into a gap defined by an end edge of the blade and the spring. Such deflection enables the spring to move past the cam pin.

An enviscerating guard is pivoted to one side of the handle and is pivoted 90.degree. with the blade abutting the guard to form a hook for convenient cutting of the animal hide by a pulling action. The guard separates the entrails and meat from the skin during cutting. The blade is pivoted to the opposite side of the handle for skinned with the guard abutting the handle. The guard includes a small opposite projection extending the pivot to form a stop for the blade extending longitudinally outwardly of the handle in position for skinning.

Abstract: A folding camp knife (10) comprises an elongated handle case (12) having sideplates (24a and b) separated by a blade gap (26) in which a blade (14) is mounted for rotation by means of an axle pin (16) passing through holes (30 and 54) in the sideplates and the blade. A locking piece (18) engages the axle pin on the outside of the handle case and can both rotate about and slide longitudinally along the axle pin. The locking piece includes a locking flag (68) which can be moved into handle and blade peripheral locking slots (38a and b and 52) when they are in registration. Once the locking flag is slid into these peripheral locking slots the axle pin can be tightened against the locking piece to prevent further movement of the locking piece, thereby preventing rotational movement between the blade and the handle case. The axle end of the blade has a plurality of locking slots (52a-e) extending thereabout which allow the blade to be placed at various angles.

  • Patent number: 4716653
Abstract: A tree saw uses a flexible sapling or tree limb as a handle extension to permit a person to cut tree branches beyond his normal reach. The tree saw comprises a foldable saw having a pair of swingable rings mounted to the back of the saw handle. A fulcrum is secured to the handle back surface intermediate the rings. The limb is inserted through the rings and over the fulcrum. The limb is bent into a concave shape. One of the rings is swung along the limb as far as possible. When the limb is released, its natural elasticity tends to straighten it and thereby force it into tight and rigid connection with the rings and fulcrum.

Abstract: A folding knife comprising a handle and a knife blade rotatable about a pivot. The invention is characterized by the combination that the handle (2) consists of only one wood piece, which is sawn open along a central longitudinal plane, so that a longitudinal gap (5) is formed along the greater part, but not along the entire length of the handle (2), that the blade pivot is located at the end (7) of the handle (2) where the gap (5) opens and is attached in the wood portions of the handle (2) located on opposite sides of the gap, and that a retaining mechanism known per se capable to retain the knife blade (4) in folded-out position and in a spring-loaded manner to retain the knife blade in folded-in position is provided. The retaining mechanism comprises a retaining arm (12) and a spring (13) acting against the same, which are mounted in the longitudinal gap (5) and have a thickness corresponding to the width of the gap (5).

The handle, formed of two spaced apart lateral handle halves includes a blade pivot adjacent its forward end. The blade, configured as a double-ended, double-edged single blade, is mounted intermediate its ends to the blade pivot for rotation to positions in which one of its ends is contained within a slot provided between the handle halves while its opposite end extends forwardly of the handle for use. A spring lock guard is configured to releasably overlie the slot in the handle and confine the inoperative blade, thereby securely locking the single blade against inadvertent rotation during use.

  • Patent number: 4622744
Abstract: A folding knife has a U-shaped body between the ends of the legs of which a blade is mounted for pivotal movement about an axis, beween open and closed positions. One leg is shorter than the other leg, and that one leg has a laterally extending protuberant portion having a hole centrally therethrough and bevellings on opposite sides of the hole. On that same side of the blade, the blade has two projections spaced equal distances from and on opposite sides of the pivotal axis of the blade, that distance being the same as the distance between the hole and the pivotal axis. As a result, the projections on the blade slide up the bevellings with a cam action upon approaching the open or closed position and snap into the hole. The sides of the projections are inclined, so that there is a cam action by which they can snap out of the hole when moving from one position toward the other position.
