Abstract: A utility knife has a protective guard that moves from a locked position to an unlocked position. Preferred mechanisms utilize a pawl that cooperates with a stop to reduce movement of the guard while the guard is in a locked position, and a simple latching mechanism that allows the pawl to bypass the stop. The pawl is disposed with respect to other elements of the mechanism such that the blade guard can only pulled back to a retracted position after operation of a trigger or other actuator, and then only for a single use. Both the stop and the catch can advantageously be carried in a fixed special relation to one another by operation of a trigger or other actuator.

Abstract: A flooring grooving tool is provided which facilitates the cutting of grooves in the surfaces of abutting sheets of linoleum and other sheet material flooring, particularly in the coving areas where the flooring sheets are curved upwardly along the walls. The tool has an elongated handle bent to delineate a larger handgrip portion from a smaller mounting end. A cutting blade mount projects from the blade mounting end of the handle and receives a U-shaped cutting blade. A hairpin bend in the cutting blade is sharpened at both edges so that the blade can cut in either direction. A planar guide fin is formed on the cutting blade mount and is located at the grooving tunnel formed between hairpin bend in the cutting blade and the cutting blade mount. The guide fin fits into the crevice between adjacent sheets of flooring to be grooved to a depth limited by the flat floor contact surfaces on the cutting blade mount.

  • Patent number: 7178246
Abstract: A cutting assembly is slidably mounted on a T-Square. The T-Square may include a scale having multiple indicia for measured cutting based on the size of the wallboard sheet being cut. The cutting assembly is mounted on a slider which may be clamped at measured positions along the arm of the T-Square. The cutting assembly includes oppositely disposed knife blades which are slidably mounted in a housing and spring loaded on opposite sides of a pivot mount such that when not in use the cutting assembly is urged to level and rests with the two knife blades retracted. As the housing is rotated so as to lower one end, the corresponding knife blade extends from the housing to engage with and score or cut the surface of the wallboard material. The cutting tool may be rotated in the opposite direction to thereby extend from the housing the other blade of the pair of oppositely disposed knife blades.
