Patent number: 6192587Abstract: An auto-aligning ribbon splitter which can be used on any size optical fiber ribbon made by any manufacturer. The auto-aligning ribbon splitter centers an optical fiber ribbon over a first splitting edge so that it can be split into two sub-units each having an equal number of optical fibers therein. The auto-aligning ribbon splitter includes a bottom plate having a channel. The channel includes a first splitting edge. Two movable plates are disposed on the bottom plate so that they are parallel to, and are centered about, the first splitting edge. A mechanism, such as an adjustment rod, is connected to the movable plates to change their position relative to the first splitting edge, but maintain each plate at an equal distance from the first splitting edge. A second splitting edge, on a top body, may then be pressed against the centered ribbon to cause an initial split between two sub-units, as the top body pushes half of the ribbon into the channel on the bottom plate.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1999Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Assignee: AlcatelInventor: Justin Thompson

Patent number: 5433008Abstract: A circular power saw includes a housing enclosing a motor and a circular saw blade rotatably driven by the motor. The housing is pivotally mounted to a base so that the saw blade may be positioned in a plurality of cutting planes. An adjustment member is mounted to the base and connected to the housing to releasably retain the housing in a plurality of positions corresponding to the different cutting planes. The adjustment member has first and second stops that correspond to first and second planar positions of the cutting blade and a stop engagement member is adapted to engage the first and second stops. The stop engagement member has a first configuration wherein the first and second positions planar positions define the limits of the planar positioning of the blade. The stop engagement member has a second configuration where at least one planar position different than the first and second planar positions defines a limit of planar positioning of the blade.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1994Date of Patent: July 18, 1995Assignee: Porter-Cable CorporationInventors: David L. Patent number: 5410813Abstract: A tool for precisely severing sheet material at a uniform predetermined distance from the line of intersection of two surfaces. A wide variety of precise cutting operations may be performed, including operations that leave a uniform predetermined overlap and operations that precisely sever the sheet material at the line of intersection. The tool has a body with a flat bottom surface, a straight front edge, a beveled surface extending between the front edge and the bottom surface and thumb screws for securely retaining a cutting blade. Also disclosed is a removable spacer plate which may be engaged with the body to perform additional cutting operations.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1994Date of Patent: May 2, 1995Assignee: Hobbico, Inc.Inventor: Paul S. Patent number: 5353508Abstract: A border cutter for use with a cutter blade carrier for cutting a strip of carpet, the carrier having a blade plate for a cutting blade, the border cutter including a surface plate for movement along a piece of carpet, and having a guide edge and a cutting blade opening normal to the guide edge, and having spaced guides with aligned slots for receiving the carrier plate for positioning a blade at the blade opening. The spaced guides extend parallel to the blade opening, with each guide having a plurality of slots extending therealong in alignment with the slots of the other guide, providing a plurality of locations on the surface plate for the blade carrier. One of the spaced guides includes a channel for receiving a guide toe plate of a blade carrier support of the blade carrier.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1993Date of Patent: October 11, 1994Assignee: Roberts Consolidated Industries, Inc.Inventor: David H. Patent number: 5325594Abstract: A hand-operated tool for cutting fibrous compressible insulation batts, and similar fibrous compressible materials. The tool, includes an elongated cutter blade housing, and a planar sheet of plexiglass, bent into a "C"-shaped configuration. End portions of the "C"-shaped plexiglass sheet fit over the ends of the cutter blade housing, so that the "C"-shaped sheet forms a presser element for the insulation batt, when placed on the top surface thereof. When the cutter blade is drawn through the batt material, the presser element compresses the material into a relatively small thickness, so that the cutter blade is enabled to completely penetrate the batt material. An insulation batt, therefore, can be neatly and completely severed, with one pass of the cutting tool.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1993Date of Patent: July 5, 1994Inventor: James P. Szafranski

Patent number: 5265342Abstract: A drywall measuring and cutting tool has a guide riding the edge of a sheet of drywall and, normal thereto, a graduated rod. A knife is fastened to the rod, and can be rotated for shallow or deep cuts. The guide has an opening through which passes the graduated rod. Idle rod length thus projects away from the knife, avoiding interference with the floor of a drywall truck when cutting drywall carried by the truck. When making repeated narrow scores, measurement and addition of numbers possibly including fractions are avoided by aligning graduation marks with score lines. Adjusting for new width cuts is performed without tools. The knife is adjustable for right or left hand operation.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1992Date of Patent: November 30, 1993Inventor: Joseph D. Lang, Jr.

Patent number: 5233748Abstract: An oval mat cutter allows the continuous adjustment of the overall size of the oval as well as the difference between its larger and smaller axes. The cutter may also produce circles. The cutter separates the knife from a first point which it keeps in a first groove. It separates this first point from a second point which it keeps in a second groove lying perpendicular to the first. A generally circular motion of the cutter while maintaining the two points in their respective grooves creates the desired oval. Making the two points in their respective groove coincide with each other will result in the production of a circle. The knife that makes the actual cut sits next to a wheel whose outer circumference has a sharp ridge. The knife has configurations where it extends to various distances beyond the edge of the wheel and one in which it sits within the wheel's circumference. To make a clean cut, the wheel, with the knife retracted, makes a groove in the mat.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1991Date of Patent: August 10, 1993Inventors: Curtis Logan, Malcolm Logan

Patent number: 5231764Abstract: An improved cutter is provided for a plasterboard sheet, used in conjunction with a conventional T-square having a head and an elongated rule extending at a right angle from the head. The improved cutter consists of a mechanism for retaining a utility blade on the elongated rule of the conventional T-square in a proper position. When the head of the conventional T-square slides along one straight edge of the plasterboard sheet, the utility blade will make a score line across the plasterboard sheet, whereby a piece of the plasterboard sheet can then be snapped off.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1992Date of Patent: August 3, 1993Inventor: Kenneth Chang
