Abstract: The invention relates to a powered reciprocating saw. To simplify use of the saw, a clamping mechanism is provided which holds an object in position while it is sawn. The clamping mechanism is mounted at the front of the housing of the saw near the saw blade. The clamping mechanism comprises: a slide element for sliding movement in the cutting direction, a supporting member, and a clamping arm rotatably mounted on the slide element by a one way clutch to clamp an object therebetween in a clamping position below the saw blade. When the saw is in use, it vibrates. Since the clamping arm has a moment of inertia with respect to the axis of rotation of the one way clutch, the oscillating movement is transformed into a progressive rotational movement of the clamping arm to clamp an object.

An abutting assembly of the device rotates from an engaging position to a non-engaging position so the saw can be used without interference. This rotation is also the first step in removing the device entirely from the saw. • Patent number: 6449851
Abstract: The invention relates to a powered reciprocating saw, in particular, to a pruning saw. To simplify use of the saw, a clamping mechanism is provided which holds an object in position while it is sawed. The clamping mechanism includes a clamping arm that is mounted at the front portion of the saw housing near the blade by a one way rotary clutch such that the arm can freely rotate in only one direction. During use, the saw vibrates due to its reciprocating parts. Since the clamping arm has a center of mass spaced apart from the axis of rotation provided by the one way rotary clutch, a progressive rotational movement of the clamping arm results which thereby automatically closes to clamp the object to be cut.

  • Patent number: 4867425
Abstract: A one-piece elongated rectangular metal fence plate adjustably attachable to a cutable guide base of plywood or plastic. One longitudinal edge of the fence plate is formed into a guide fence for hand held power circular saws or saber saws. The invention has straight widened edges of adjustably bolting to the surface of the guide base. The fence plate attached to the guide base provides an elongated saw guide fence for straight cutting of large building material panels such as plywood. The guide base is a rectangular panel sized equal in length to the fence plate. The guide base is initially of greater width than the width of the fence plate plus the width of the base of the power saw. For the initial set-up, the fence plate is bolted to the guide base. The guide base is then cut to size using a power hand saw with the guide fence of the attached fence plate serving as the saw guide to assure parallel alignment of the guide fence relative to the cut edge of the guide base.

  • Patent number: 4841639
Abstract: A portable band saw for cutting boards of variable thickness from a log has a frame that carries the band saws wheels and a space between the cutting length of the band and the frame that is large enough for the board that is cut from the log to fit through and a slide or rollers for riding on the log when the band saw is cutting a board from the log is carried by the frame in the space between the cutting length of the band and the frame so that the band saw rides along the log from end to end of the log while cutting a board from the log of thickness determined by the space between the cutting length of the band and the bottom of the slide. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, to make the first cut on a rough log, anchor plates are attached to each end of the log that carry supports for a smooth rigid beam suspended between the supports on which the band saw slide rides to cut a straight flat surface longitudinally along the log.

Abstract: A portable sawmill (20) having a frame (22) adapted to be disposed transversely of a log (24). A pair of horizontally spaced apart wheels (26a,b) are adapted to straddle the log (24). The wheels (26a,b) are rotatably supported by the frame (22) for rotation in a substantially vertical plane. A band saw blade (28) is trained around the wheels (26a,b) and for movement transversely of the log (24). An engine (30) is provided for rotating at least one of the wheels (26a,b) to cause the band saw blade (28) to form a cut in the log (24) as the frame (22) is moved longitudinally along the log (24). An elevating assembly (44) is provided for supporting the frame (22) so as to enable vertical adjustment of the band saw blade (28) relative to a top surface of the log (24). Guide rollers (40) are interconnected through the frame (22) for guiding the frame (22) along the log (24).

  • Patent number: 4676001
Abstract: A portable compass saw which is provided with an oscillation drive for driving a saw blade. The oscillation drive includes a gear, which is mounted on a shaft in the housing; engaging in the teeth of the gear is a pinion of a drive shaft of a drive motor. At a distance from its axis of rotation, the gear is provided with a pin extending parallel thereto. The pin is in driving connection with a clutch member, which is connected to the push rod and has a guide for the bolt, with the guide extending at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the push rod. The teeth of the gear are provided on that side of the gear which faces the push rod. The pinion is located in the region between the push rod and the gear, which is seated loosely on the shaft and is held on the latter under the load of the pinion. As a result, the gear is held reliably in its installed position, even though it is seated loosely on the shaft and is not secured to prevent axial displacement by separate securing members.

  • Patent number: 4656742
Abstract: A portable compass saw having an oscillation drive for a push rod, to which a saw blade is attached. The push rod has an angular cross-section, and is guided over part of its length on all sides in a housing. Guide surfaces, themselves formed by parts of the housing, are provided for the purpose of guidance on two opposite sides of the push rod. Roller bearings extending at right angles to the stroke direction are respectively located on the two other sides of the push rod. In the region of the oscillation drive, a pressure member acts on the push rod on the opposite side. This member loads the push rod in the direction toward the oscillation drive. The push rod is consequently guided in a trouble free manner in the housing in, and at right angles to, the direction of the stroke, so that no play occurs which may impair the saw cut.
