Accordingly, not only the exhaust can be discharged forward from the front side of the body, but also the exhaust sound can be propagated forward so that less exhaust sound is heard by the operator, thereby improving the work environment.

Abstract: A portable work apparatus has a combustion engine for driving a work tool. An air/fuel mixture is supplied to the engine via a carburetor which is provided with an electrical heating element for heating to a given temperature. The heating element is connected to a switch via which electrical energy, which is provided by a generator driven by the engine, is supplied. When a given temperature is exceeded, the switch interrupts the energy supply. To achieve an exact temperature control, the ohmic resistance value of the heating element is stored in a memory in dependence on the temperature. The current flowing through the heating element and the voltage drop at the heating element are measured and the instantaneous resistance of the heating element is calculated therefrom. This calculated value is compared to the value stored in the memory to open or close the switch in dependence on the comparison.

Abstract: A chainsaw (1) comprises an internal combustion engine (3) having a cylinder (4) with a piston (5) connected to a crankshaft (6). The piston (5) has an upper surface at a distance D from the central axis of the crankshaft (6) measured along the longitudinal axis defined by the cylinder (4), when the piston (5) is in its top dead centre. The chainsaw (1) is further provided with a front handle (7), which central axis is disposed at a distance B from the central axis of the crank shaft (6) along an axis substantially perpendicular to a horizontal plane (13), the horizontal plane (13) being defined as the plane on which the chainsaw (1) may rest in an upright position when not operated. The chainsaw (1) also includes a throttle lever (9), which rear end is disposed at a distance C from the central axis of the crankshaft (6) along an axis substantially parallel to the horizontal plane (13).

  • Patent number: 8176643
Abstract: According to a chain saw braking system, engagement between a front end portion of a belt and a main body by an engagement member is released at the time of application of an impact. When a front end portion is pulled by the spring force of a compression coil spring, an elongate hole for protrusion is engaged with a protrusion to restrict a rear end portion from being moved in the same direction as the front end portion. Thus, it is possible to strongly tighten a drum by the belt to thereby reliably stop the movement of a chain. With this arrangement, the chain can be prevented from being damaged when a chain saw is accidentally dropped onto the ground due to an impact applied thereto.

  • Patent number: 8156654
Abstract: The invention provides a chain saw attachment for unobstructed cutting of smaller objects with diameters less than three inches and larger objects with diameters greater than three inches. The attachment includes a set of prongs that vertically extend at an acute angle from a cover above the cutting teeth of the chain saw blade to a specified distance below the blade. The prongs stabilize small objects from whipping and dragging when engaged by the cutting teeth and facilitate the cutting of brush with diameter equal to height of the blade. Moreover, the cover does not extend the full length of the blade to allow for fully unobstructed cuts using the uncovered section of the blade. The cover increase safe operation of the chain saw and distributes stress from a particular prong over the entire attachment.
