Abstract: A reciprocating saw includes a housing having an upper surface and a side surface, and a blade holder supported on the end of a reciprocating saw bar. The blade holder is adapted to support a saw blade such that the resulting cutting plane lies outboard of one of the housing's surfaces, while a reference plane, orthogonal to the cutting plane and intersecting a cutting edge of the blade, lies outboard of the other of the housing's surfaces. Preferably, each surface includes a flat, and the blade's cutting edge is supported proximate to an intersection of the planar extensions of the flats. A wobble drive assembly including a single wobble plate with an integral counterweight advantageously permits a relatively outboard position of the saw bar on the housing to reduce bending moments on the bearings supporting the saw bar.

Abstract: A wedging clamp assembly is provided for retaining a saw blade. A housing defining a vertical cavity therein is included in the assembly. The cavity includes a top end and a bottom end tapered with respect to the top end. Extending through a bottom end of the housing is a saw blade passageway included in the bottom end of the cavity. Disposed inside the cavity is a saw blade retention mechanism. A piston is further disposed within the cavity. The saw blade retention mechanism is configured for lockingly retaining a saw blade upon insertion into the passageway, thus, causing the piston to be biased against the bottom end of the cavity. At least one locking element is further included in the saw blade retention mechanism, and such locking element is disposed in the cavity for engaging the bottom tapered end. A wedging clamping force exerted by the at least one locking element is applied to the saw blade, and such force renders the saw blade immobile relative to the housing.

Abstract: The flush cut power saw comprises a framework having a base plate with a saw blade slot extending through two risers located at one end of the base plate. At least two rods slidably receive a movable housing for supporting a motor at a location above the cutting blade. The motor is secured to a transmission to convert the rotary motion of the motor to a reciprocating, linear motion. The transmission is connected to a saw blade mounting apparatus, which linearly reciprocates a cutting blade, which adjustably extends below the mounting plate. The cutting blade may be adjustably positioned with an adjustable stop for depth in vertical alignment with the framework. The transmission reciprocally biases the cutting blade, enabling the cutting blade to reciprocally travel linearly in relation with the movable housing, to complete a cut flush with an adjoining surface, while controlling the depth of cut.

  • Patent number: 6308425
Abstract: A clamping mechanism for a power tool which has a bayonet washer rotatably mounted on the end of a plunger so that the bayonet washer is rotatable between an open and a closed position. The bayonet washer is biassed towards the closed position by a torsion spring, but is latched in the open position when no operating member is positioned in the clamping mechanism. When an operating member is inserted into the mechanism through a slot in the bayonet washer and into engagement with the plunger, the washer is automatically released from the open position and rotates under the biassing force of the torsion spring to the closed position whereupon the operating member is locked into the power tool.
