  • Patent number: 8296954
Abstract: A shaver includes a shaving unit having e.g., three shaving elements. Each shaving element accommodates a cutter member for cutting off hairs. Each shaving element further accommodates a gear wheel which is part of a transmission for coupling a drive shaft for driving the cutter member to an output shaft of a motor of the shaver. A top side of a space where the gear wheel is located is covered by a partition, where only the drive shaft extends through this partition. Each shaving element can be individually opened by removing a top portion of the shaving element, including the cutter member, from a base portion of the shaving element where the gear wheel, the drive shaft and the partition are located. An opening system may be provided to open all the shaving elements in one action by reversal of the direction of rotation of the output shaft, for example.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a cutting member (6) of a shaver (1). The method comprises the steps of providing a plate-shaped carrier (10), cutting at least one cutting element (9a, 9b) free from the carrier except for a residual connection between a base (15, 23) of the cutting element and the carrier, and bending the cutting element relative to the carrier. According to the invention the steps of cutting free and bending are performed simultaneously using a tool (11) having a combined punching and bending effect. By using such a tool the action of cutting free is obtained by a tearing process which does not lead to a free space and a loss of material between the cutting element (9a, 9b) and the carrier (10). As a result the strength of the carrier is not reduced by such a free space or loss of material.

Abstract: Shaving apparatus having at least one cutting unit (3) with an external cutting member (4) and a rotatable internal cutting member (6) each having cooperating cutting edges (8,9) forming bearing surfaces of a first bearing, said external and internal cutting member (4,6) having a second bearing with bearing surfaces (14,17). To minimize the friction between the cutting edges (8,9), means (13) with visco-elastic properties are provided between the two bearings, so that during operation the distance between the bearing surfaces (8,9) of the first bearing adjusts oneself to the distance between the bearing surfaces (14,17) of the second bearing. During cutting of hairs the means with visco-elastic properties behave as a stiff element whereas during periods in which no hairs are cut these means behave relatively soft so that the cutting gaps between the cutting edges are closed.
