Abstract: Process for removing peripheral portions such as bead regions of a glass sheet including a step of pushing the glass sheet in the peripheral portion using a pushing mechanism such as a pushing bar, and corresponding apparatus. As a result of the use of the pushing mechanism, the engagement completion time for suction cups, if used, are reduced significantly. A process without using suction cups is enabled with enhanced yield. The increased process stability and enlarged process window are particularly advantageous for processing glass sheets having high flexibility.

Abstract: A portable, hand tool for scribing optical fibers in a cleaving process. The scribing tool comprises a body within which the optical fiber is supported for rotation with respect to the body, about an axis within the body. The optical fiber is constrained by supports from movements along its axis. An actuator moves a scribing bit orthogonal relative to the fiber axis. The actuator may be a piezoelectric actuator, such as in a tube that bends under applied voltage. In one embodiment the scribing tool has a single scribing bit. In another embodiment, the scribing tool has multiple (N) scribing bits that can be applied against the optical fiber simultaneously.

Abstract: Cutting apparatus is provided for cutting a hole or `window` in the wall of a pipe, for example prior to joining a branch pipe to a host pipe. The apparatus comprises a chassis frame 14 carrying a cutter unit 42 supporting a cutter tool 62. The chassis is attached to and movable around the pipe 12 by means of `roller` chains 24. The cutter unit is movable with respect to the chassis frame by means of the associated slider block 38 which is slidable along longitudinally extending chassis frame members 16. Thus, the cutter tool 62 can be moved relative to the workpiece in one sense by movement of the chassis frame 14 and in another sense by movement of the cutter tool relative to the chassis frame. A combination of such movements enable the hole or `window` to be cut.

Abstract: A pocketable manual shaver when encased for storage generally shaped like a fountain pen comprising a pliable handle portion containing a shaving substance that interconnects to a shaving head through a combination pivot and valve member. The shaving head includes a shaving blade whereby the shaving substance can be dispensed from the handle through the valve member to an area opposite the shaving blade when the head is rotated relative to the handle to a use position. The combination pivot and valve attachment between the head and handle allows the head to rotate relative to the handle between a stowed position which is inline with the longitudinal centerline of the handle and a use position which is perpendicular to the longitudinal center line of the handle.

  • Patent number: 4753008
Abstract: Apparatus for severing primary tubes of steam generator of a nuclear reactor. The tubes are under water because they are radioactive and also because it is undesirable to expose the tubes to oxidation. The tubes are in a confined region of the steam generator affording limited access for cutting. The apparatus includes a file whose cutting surface is cylindrical. The file is located wholly in the region where the tube is clamped within the cooperative clamps which secure the tube for cutting. The file is rotated in cutting engagement with the tube by an air motor. The file is mounted on a slider which is pulled by a cable causing the file to cut through the tube.

  • Patent number: 4747212
Abstract: A cutting device for plastic pipe for use principally in the aid of plumbing, swimming pool and spa installations. The pipe cutter is designed specifically to be used or attached to a hand held drill motor of the type which tradesmen commonly carry and use for drilling holes and setting screws. The pipe cutter includes a body which is attachable to the front of a drill motor and houses a dual directional linear actuator such as an epicyclic ball screw with bi-directional brake. The epicyclic ball screw linear actuator responds to the chuck or rotating shaft of the drill motor. The housing defines or holds a U shaped recess or cradle for receiving a plastic pipe extending transverse to the length of the housing or more particularly on center or to the axis of the drill motor shaft. A guillotine type of cutter blade is driven by the screw actuator to move through a slot into the cradle to be driven through the side wall of the pipe and therefore sever the pipe within the cradle.

  • Patent number: 4603463
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the in situ repair of a failed compression fitg is provided. Initially, a portion of a guide tube is inserted coaxially in the bore of the compression fitting and locked therein. A close fit dethreading device is then coaxially mounted on the guide tube to cut the threads from the fitting. Thereafter, the dethreading device and guide tube are removed and a new fitting is inserted onto the dethreaded fitting with the body of the new fitting overlaying the dethreaded portion. Finally, the main body of the new fitting is welded to the main body of the old fitting whereby a new threaded portion of the replacement fitting is precisely coaxial with the old threaded portion. If needed, a bushing is located on the dethreaded portion which is sized to fit snugly between the dethreaded portion and the new fitting.
