Patent number: 5443196Abstract: A fastener applicator, for example for cable clips, uses the kinetic energy of a flywheel rotated by a prime mover, preferably a battery driven electric motor, to drive a striker for firing a fastener into a support. An actuator which strikes the striker may be a fixed projection on the flywheel or be an element on the flywheel movable relative to the flywheel by centrifugal force to project the actuator from an inoperative position to an operative position for striking the striker. The drive from the prime mover to the flywheel is through a clutch or releasable drive coupling which temporarily disconnects the drive when the actuator strikes the striker so that the kinetic energy at the flywheel alone drives the striker and the prime mover is protected from the impact. A micro-processor measures the rotational speed of the flywheel and stops the prime mover when a pre-determined speed for the necessary kinetic energy is achieved.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1992Date of Patent: August 22, 1995Assignee: Illinois Tool Works, Inc.Inventor: Geoffrey M. A first end of the pivotable lever is connected to the carrier plate by an extension spring which acts to move the lever to its at rest or actuated position. As a predetermined rotational velocity is reached, the lever pivots at the groove to pivot away from the electrical switch aligned axially with the rotor shaft. The electrical switch, in turn, is mounted to a terminal board fixedly mounted to the motor housing to thereby positionally maintain the governor on the motor shaft as well as retain the associated capacitor.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1987Date of Patent: December 5, 1989Assignee: Flint & Walling Industries, Inc.Inventor: Paul T. Patent number: 4868906Abstract: When operating a synchronous machine as a synchronous generator, a suppression resistor is required across the main generator field. However when operating the synchronous machine as an induction motor, a current is induced in the main generator field which is typically greater than the current carrying capability of the suppression resistor. In order to overcome the foregoing problem, the present invention provides a centrifugally activated switch for mounting on a rotor and which provides an alternate current path for the induced current.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1987Date of Patent: September 19, 1989Assignee: Sundstrand CorporationInventor: James D. Patent number: 4853569Abstract: A noise suppression circuit is provided for capacitor-start and capacitor-run alternating current motors. To prevent rotor chattering and noise from occurring upon disconnection of power from the motor, separate switches are used to connect alternating current power to the windings and to the capacitor; so that when power is disconnected, the capacitor is prevented from discharging into the motor windings. A power dissipation resistor is connected in parallel with the capacitor to permit the capacitor to discharge.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1988Date of Patent: August 1, 1989Inventor: Alexander J. Lewus

Patent number: 4734601Abstract: A noise suppression circuit is provided for an alternating current motor which has a capacitor connected in parallel with one of the windings to form an LC resonant circuit at the operating frequency of the motor. The motor includes first and second windings of substantially the same wire size connected in series on the stator core. The LC resonant circuit formed by the capacitor and the winding across which it is connected improves the efficiency of operation of the motor. To prevent chattering and noise from occuring upon disconnection of power from the windings, separate switches are used for applying alternating current power to the windings and to the capacitor; so that when power is disconnected, the capacitor is isolated from the winding across which it is connected. At the same time, a power dissipation resistor connected in parallel with the capacitor permits it to discharge.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1987Date of Patent: March 29, 1988Inventor: Alexander J. Patent number: 4716326Abstract: Motor has outboard switch compartment with components therein such as a capacitor, thermal protector, terminal board, motor circuit controlling switch assembly, a manual switch, a thermal plastic molded cover for the compartment fastened with axially directed screws, and an optional rain shroud positively positioned on the end shield. The switch assembly is designed to have accurate contact alignment which will be maintained over the life of the switch; a wiping action of the contacts; a high amount of contact travel in terms of percentage of switch actuator travel; protected contact blade arms; and a multiple height mounting feature which assures a more optimum location of the switch at final assembly with respect to the location of the switch operating mechnism. Switch arms are essentially parallel and have contacts positioned directly in line with the actuating line of a switch actuator and an operating mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1986Date of Patent: December 29, 1987Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Lynn E. Patent number: 4689508Abstract: A shaded pole induction motor includes a plurality of series-connected running windings and a plurality of series-connected shaded pole coils (windings). A normally closed, centrifugal-force-responsive switch is provided in series with the shaded pole coils to effect an interruption in current therethrough when the motor reaches a predetermined speed. As a replacement to the normally closed switch, a switch constituted by a relay winding and normally open relay contacts may be provided, the contacts being in series with the shaded pole coils, these normally open contacts being closed in response to high initial starting current in the running windings flowing through a relay winding and being opened again when the motor gets up to a predetermined speed; less current flows in the relay winding and in the running windings under this condition. A heat-responsive circuit breaker may be placed in series with the normally open contacts or centrifugal-force responsive switch.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1985Date of Patent: August 25, 1987Inventor: Tai-Her Yang

Patent number: 4689452Abstract: The invention is directed to a rotational speed sensing switch which provides a variable linear displacement of an output member in response to a varying speed rotational input. The switch includes a sensing means, which includes a rotatable rolling element-and-ramp assembly, acting in cooperation with a signaling means which includes an axially movable actuating disc, an output member comprising a switch rod, and a biasing means. The aforementioned improvement over the prior art comprises a regulating means included within the sensing means.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1986Date of Patent: August 25, 1987Assignee: Sundstrand CorporationInventor: David C. Patent number: 4665286Abstract: A single phase induction motor starting and automatic reversing switch has two pairs of springy vertically spaced apart switch blades supported in opposed cantilever fashion on an insulating base. Each pair consists of an upper blade and a lower blade. A nominally stationary contact is mounted in spaced relation above each upper blade and below each lower blade. Opposite ends of the motor starting winding are connected in common between the upper and lower stationary contacts. A shaft of insulating material with a lever at one end operates the switch. The shaft extends between the vertically spaced apart blade pairs and has axially displaced oppositely radially extending arms, one between one pair of blades and the other between the other set of blades. Turning the operator shaft in a first direction causes one arm to press a blade against one upper stationary contact and the other arm to press a blade against one lower contact.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1986Date of Patent: May 12, 1987Assignee: Emerson Electric Co.Inventor: John M.
