  • Patent number: 11870319
Abstract: An electric motor has a stator mechanically coupled to the rotor by a nutating traction interface, such that during nutation of the rotor with respect to the stator a tilt axis of the rotor progresses about the axis of rotation of the output shaft. The rotor and a surface of the stator bound a dynamic gap across which a magnetic field is produced by electrical activation of the motor to generate a force between the rotor and the stator. The traction interface and the gap are arranged such that, in a plane containing the axis of rotation of the output shaft, the traction interface is angled with respect to the stator surface bounding the gap. The rotor is connected to the output shaft by a tiltable connection such as a gimbal.

  • Patent number: 11329532
Abstract: A drive system for a high torque mechanical load includes a power supply, a controller, and a high torque electric motor. The electric motor includes a rotor that is oriented eccentrically relative to a stator. In one form, the electric motor has a crankshaft that transmit the torque to the mechanical load. In other variations, the electric motor includes at least two electric motor lobes with opposite stroke positions to provide a smoother output at higher speeds. During operation, the rotor is magnetically attracted to the energized electromagnet. With the rotor attracted to the electromagnet in the stator, the rotor contacts or comes in close proximity to the stator at a contact area. The close proximity between the rotor and stator at the contact area allows very large magnetic forces to be utilized to produce torque without increasing the size or weight of the electric motor.

Abstract: A microfabricated wobble motor with a positioning arm attached to the wobble motor rotor acts as a fine positioner with bidirectional movement. The primary application is a rotary actuator for the read/write head in a very small magnetic recording disk drive. An integrated head-arm assembly is attached at one end to the rotor of the wobble motor. The other end of the head-arm assembly has a head carrier that is maintained in contact with the disk. Head position error information is read from the disk and used to provide control signals to each of the stator elements. The stator elements are sequentially addressed by applying a voltage from a driver circuit. This causes the rotor to be electrostatically attracted to the activated stators, so that the rotor is movable bidirectionally. The read/write head can thus be moved bidirectionally to any of the data tracks on the disk and maintained on a desired data track for reading or writing data.

Abstract: A nonelectromagnetic motor comprising a base, a bent shaft which is rotable relative to the base wherein the bent shaft comprises a straight portion aligned with a main axis and an offset portion that is offset with respect to the main axis; and a drive means for driving the offset portion of the bent shaft along a generally circular path in a plane perpendicular to the main axis to rotate the bent shaft. The bent shaft and drive means for driving the bent shaft can be selected from piezoelectric, magnetostrictive, rheological and shape memory alloys. The drive means of the nonelectromagnetic motor can additionally comprise a shell which shell surrounds and houses the bent shaft and precesses or gyrates which in turn causes the bent drive shaft to rotate. The nonelectromagnetic motor does not rely on friction for the application of torque upon a rotor.

  • Patent number: 5579290
Abstract: The stator of the motor comprises two pole pieces (1, 2) which are axially staggered. An axially magnetized cylindrical rotor (5) is disposed in the openings or bores of said pole pieces. The rotor (5) is provided with an external toothing (3) which is continuously engaged with an internal toothing (4) of the stator. In the unexcited stator, the rotor (5) assumes a stable position by attraction to the pole pieces (1, 2). Due to the excitation of the stator by a pulse having a suitable polarity, the rotor is displaced to a diametrically opposed stable position. The toothings (3, 4) stay in engagement during said displacement, resulting in an angular displacement of the rotor, the angle being defined by the difference of the number of teeth of said toothings (3, 4). The motor allows a miniaturization and a simple control by alternating pulses of opposed polarities.

  • Patent number: 5497041
Abstract: In a low speed geared motor, a rotational magnetic field is formed in a stator against S-poles and N-poles in a permanent magnetic ring capable of being elliptically deformed. An external gear is rotated while internally meshing with an internal gear by means of rotation of the elliptical deformation caused in the permanent magnetic ring by the rotational magnetic field. As a result, the external gear is rotated on its axis by a difference between the number of teeth in the external gear and that in the internal gear for one rotation of the elliptical deformation. The rotational component is transmitted to an output shaft through a transmission means while absorbing the elliptically deformed component. With this construction, it is possible to enhance the energy conversion efficiency with a small size, to achieve a longer continuous operation, to almost eliminate backlash and hysteresis, to reduce the angular momentum, to improve.

Abstract: A geared motor employing a brushless induction motor in nested arrangement, either concentrically inwardly or concentrically outwardly, with a gear reduction device employing two gear wheels, one with interior teeth and one with exterior teeth, said teeth being meshed together. The difference in the number of teeth is small relative to the total number of teeth of each gear wheel. One of the two gear wheels moves in an eccentric path, is free to rotate relative to the rotor but is driven thereby. The other gear is fixed relative to the housing. An output accommodating the eccentric movement of the free gear derives reduced rotational speed and torque from the system.
