The controller includes an instruction set executable to evaluate integrity of the groundless barrier discharge plasma igniter based upon the magnitude of the secondary current flow during the plasma discharge event.

According to the present invention, bonding between a precious metal chip and a substrate can be reliably maintained to prolong the life of an ignition plug. Accordingly, precious metals can be efficiently used to save resources.
