    Abstract: The invention relates to a lighting device which is operable in two modes. In a first operating mode the flux of a lighting effect having a specified chromaticity is rendered based on the maximum (luminous) flux at which the chromaticity can be rendered by the lighting device. This can cause the maximum (luminous) flux across a range of colors that the lighting device can render to vary greatly. For example, a white color may be rendered at a far greater intensity than a primary color. In a second operating mode the specified chromaticity is rendered based on a predetermined maximum (luminous) flux for that specified chromaticity, or a color range that it is comprised in, or a predetermined maximum (luminous) flux for one or more color channels that are used in combination to render the light effect. This reduces the differences in maximum (luminous) flux of lighting effects rendered across the range of colors that are rendered by the lighting device.

The number of LEDs in each string may, for example, be selected to match a rectified voltage output range of the ballast. A normally-open thermostat may, for example, be connected in parallel between the ballast and a rectifier and be configured to short-circuit the ballast if the circuit overheats. Various embodiments may advantageously utilize existing power processing functions of an electronic ballast to reduce complexity of a driver circuit for a constant voltage DC source.

    Abstract: Methods and systems for improved dimming of LED based illumination devices are described herein. An AC input voltage provided to an LED driver is rectified and the rectified signal is divided down by a voltage divider circuit to supply electrical power to a dimming interface circuit. The fraction by which the voltage divider circuit divides down the rectified signal is controlled by a Dynamic Input Voltage Compensator (DIVC) based on the peak value of the rectified signal. In this manner, the DIVC increases the range of AC input voltage to the LED driver while maintaining efficiency and stability of the LED based illumination system by reducing the variation of the voltage supplied to the dimming interface circuit over a larger range of AC input voltage.
