The electromagnetic shield is preferably connected to the ground reference potential of an operating device of the high-pressure discharge lamp.

The bias control circuit of the ballast receives a supply voltage from a power supply and the remote enable signal and selectively energizes a bias regulator circuit of the ballast as a function of the remote enable signal. When the bias regulator circuit is energized, a controller of the ballast operates the ballast to provide power from the power supply to the lamp.

Thereby, an intensity of the light to be irradiated to an object with a high reflection factor can be decreased. This can suppress decreasing of driver's frontal visibility.

    Abstract: An imaging system for use in a vehicle headlamp control system includes an opening, an image sensor, a red lens blocking red complement light between the opening and the image sensor, and a red complement lens blocking red light between the opening and the image sensor. Each lens focuses light onto a different subwindow of the image sensor. The imaging system allows processing and control logic to detect the presence of headlamps on oncoming vehicles and tail lights on vehicles approached from the rear for the purpose of controlling headlamps. A light sampling lens may be used to redirect light rays from an arc spanning above the vehicle to in front of the vehicle into substantially horizontal rays. The light sampling lens is imaged by the image sensor to produce an indication of light intensity at various elevations. The processing and control logic uses the light intensity to determine whether headlamps should be turned on or off.

The halogen bulb can include a first filament, a second filament and a shield member if necessary or desired. The first filament can be used as the above headlight, and the second filament adjacent the first filament can be used as the daytime running lamp. Because the second filament can be located at a closer position than the first filament with respect to the reflector, light emitted from the second filament can form a wider light distribution than that of the first filament. Therefore, the vehicle headlamp can provide a daytime running lamp with a favorable light distribution pattern along with the above headlight.

The light controller may be coupled to other light controllers to enable the control of additional lights in a synchronized manner. The light controller may be particularly well suited to controlling light emitting diodes and controlling lights in a vehicle accent lighting application, although many other uses may be apparent.

    Abstract: A rainfall determination apparatus for determining rainfall based on data relating to a wiping operation of a wiper. The apparatus includes a detection device for detecting the wiping operation every time this operation is performed; a timer for starting to clock a predetermined period of time for each wiping operation; a counter for counting the number of times of the wiping operation performed before the predetermined period of time has elapsed; and a determination device for determining that rainfall occurs when the counter counts a predetermined number of times of the wiping operation which is successively performed. The timing of lighting the headlight of a vehicle can be changed in accordance with the result of the determination about the rainfall situation based on the wiping operation of the existing wiper. The apparatus is inexpensive and can be easily built in an automatic lighting system for vehicles, which is relatively expensive.

    Abstract: A PWM signal generation circuit and a PWM control circuit are provided in which the duty ratio is easily changed and which can also avoid adverse impact from ambient temperature changes and the like. At the beginning of charging a capacitor with a current flow, a voltage level at a connection point between the negative input terminal of a comparator and the capacitor is still below a charging threshold. When the charging threshold is exceeded, the comparator is inverted to a low state and a current flows into an output point of the comparator to start discharging the capacitor. At the beginning of discharging from the capacitor, the voltage level at the connection point is still above the discharging threshold. However, when the voltage level falls below the discharging threshold, the comparator returns to a high state, and the charging operation again takes over.

    Abstract: A charge pump circuit boosts a voltage of a battery so as to generate a drive voltage for an LED. A constant current circuit generates a constant current to feed through the LED. A monitoring circuit monitors a cathode potential of the LED, i.e., a voltage across the constant current circuit. A control circuit receives a result of monitoring from the monitoring circuit 110 and increases a step-up ratio of the charge pump circuit when the voltage across the constant current circuit drops below a minimum voltage that guarantees a constant current. The control circuit sets an externally requested constant current value in the constant current circuit. When a change from a large current to a small current is requested, the control circuit returns the step-up ratio of the charge pump circuit to 1.0.

    Abstract: A mobile light is disclosed that produces a high level of illumination without glare using the DC power of a vehicle's battery and charging system. The mobile light uses a high-intensity discharge lamp with a control circuit that initially ignites the lamp using a voltage multiplier circuit and that maintains illumination of the lamp using an FET switching circuit that applies a lower AC voltage to the lamp. The microprocessor also periodically adjusts the power delivered to the lamp to compensate for adverse conditions, such as high temperatures within the work light, or a high or low DC input voltage. The microprocessor also periodically senses the level of illumination provided by the lamp and adjusts the voltage applied to the lamp accordingly.
