Patent number: 4665625Abstract: A component inspection apparatus includes a component holder mounted on a compound slide structure. Two arrays of gauging elements are provided on a mutually perpendicularly movable slide. These arrays can be adjusted on the slide and each array includes a plurality of separate gauge elements movable by contact with the work and at least one linear transducer connected to each gauge element. In use, the slides are moved to a plurality of predetermined positions in a sequence. The displacements of the probe elements at each position are noted and compared with displacements obtained when the same sequence of positions is followed while a master componet is in the holder.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1985Date of Patent: May 19, 1987Assignee: Sigma LimitedInventors: Eric Ireland, Rory M. Patent number: 4646570Abstract: Method and apparatus for taking into account position inaccuracies of attachment surfaces for later attachment of components, that possess mass on a rotor, such as a crankshaft with crankpins, during balancing of the rotor. The attachment surfaces such as crankpins function as sites for the later assembly of components that possess mass. Differences between the ideal and actual positions of each attachment surface are determined and are taken into account during the balancing procedure.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1985Date of Patent: March 3, 1987Assignee: Carl Schenck AGInventor: Harald Schoenfeld

Patent number: 4640014Abstract: A dimensional checking tool for checking the "flush" and "gap" dimensions around a pressed panel has two probes 20 and 22 which move into and out of a housing 10, and are biassed in an outward direction, against the surfaces of a panel 34. Transducers or other devices 38 and 44 are sensitive to the positions of the probes and provide signals representative of the probe positions and which can be passed from the tool to an external data capture system.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1986Date of Patent: February 3, 1987Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventor: Arthur Thomas

Patent number: 4611408Abstract: A mechanical averaging gauge for averaging displacements at a plurality of locations along the surface of an object. The gauge includes a measuring unit which is urged into contact with the surface of the object. Several probes extend from the measuring unit and rest on the surface of the object. The probes are interconnected by means of cylindrical sliding members in contact with the rear of each of the probes. Trapezoidal sliding members are disposed between the cylindrical members so that the displacement of the measuring unit from a reference surface is the average of the various displacements of the individual probes. The arrangement also results in each probe contacting the surface of the object with substantially equal force. Therefore, the arrangement has application as a clamping device.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1985Date of Patent: September 16, 1986Assignee: The L. S. Starrett CompanyInventor: Robert A. Plante

Patent number: 4606130Abstract: A plain grinding machine wherein the gauges which are used to monitor the diameter and the axial position of a workpiece constitute a unitary apparatus with one or two first sensors which can be moved linearly at right angles to the axis of the workpiece which is mounted in the machine tool and a second sensor which is pivotable about an axis extending at right angles to the axis of the workpiece in response to engagement with a shoulder on the workpiece. The second sensor can constitute one of the first sensors and the sensors can cause the generation of appropriate signals, denoting the diameter and the axial position of the workpiece, by a single signal generating measuring unit or by two discrete units.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 1985Date of Patent: August 19, 1986Assignee: Schaudt Maschinenbau GmbHInventor: Ulrich Vetter

Patent number: 4592149Abstract: An apparatus for verifying the acceptability of the curvature of kinescope shadow mask after such masks are welded to the support frame includes a fixed member having a surface curved to conform to the curvature of the shadow mask. Sensors are embedded in the curved surface and engage a shadow mask placed on the fixed member. A movable support frame includes support members which support the shadow mask frame above the fixed member while the mask is welded to the shadow mask frame. The sensors also are movable along with the movable support frame. After the welding is completed the support frame is raised to remove the mask from the surface of the fixed member. The sensors are biased and remain in engagement with the shadow mask whereby the sensor readings verify that objectionable deformation of the shadow mask did not occur during the welding operation.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1985Date of Patent: June 3, 1986Assignee: RCA CorporationInventor: Gerald R. Patent number: 4574494Abstract: An apparatus for determining the charging profile on the charging surface of a shaft furnace is presented. The apparatus consists of a plurality of level probes, each probe including a weight which is suspended vertically above the charging surface on the first end of a cable which projects from a supporting arm. The second end of each of these cables, in turn, is connected outside the furnace to respective winding drums, each drum being controlled by a driving device which raises or lowers the probe connected to the drum. This invention also consists of a monitoring device for measuring the unwinding of the cable from the drum and the descent of the probe onto the charging surface as well as a method of replacing an individual probe and its cable from outside the shaft furnace.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1984Date of Patent: March 11, 1986Assignee: Paul Wurth S.A.Inventors: Pierre Mailliet, Emile Lonardi, Henri Radoux, Victor Kremer
