  • Patent number: 4706058
Abstract: A miniature variable inductor comprises a coil soldered to a pair of connecting skids. These skids are clipped to two oppositely disposed lateral walls of an injection-moulded plastics cover in the shape of a hollow die. A solid part of the cover and a hollow space lie between these two walls. A central opening through these walls, the solid part of the cover and the hollow space defines a housing for a movable ferromagnetic core. There is a screwthread on at least part of this core. The coil is disposed in the aforementioned hollow space coaxially with the central opening, encapsulated in resin. The central opening has a threaded portion where it passes through the solid part of the cover. This threaded portion is complementary to the thread on the core.

  • Patent number: 4701738
Abstract: A high-voltage current transformer of the head design with a column made of insulating material which supports the head housing. The primary lead is approximately U-shaped, whereby only its horizontal base passes through the central opening of secondary system and at least one of its two legs passes downwardly through a sealing plate in an insulating-medium-tight fashion to outside the space delimited by insulating column, and is contactable from below. The other of the two legs passes through sealing plate in the case of a switchable primary lead likewise downward in an insulating-medium-tight fashion and is directly contactable or in the case of a non-switchable primary is electrically connected to the sealing plate without any holes therethrough. The head housing, designed as hood, also completely encloses primary lead and secondary system from above and is fastened in an insulating-medium-tight fasion to sealing plate.

  • Patent number: 4683454
Abstract: A solenoid actuator including a coil of electrically conductive wire, a yoke of magnetic material surrounding the coil, and a non-electrically and non-magnetically conductive material encapsulating the coil and yoke. A pair of terminals connected to the ends of the coil project outwardly beyond an exterior surface of the encapsulation. Any of a variety of electrical connection modules is adapted to receive the coil terminals and electrically connect them to standard electrical connectors projecting from the module. Different modules have different forms of standard electrical connectors, so that regardless of the type of connector available at the source of electric power, a suitable module can be connected to the encapsulated coil for cooperation with the power source connector. The body of each module is formed of resilient material so that when the module is tightly attached to the coil encapsulation, a seal is formed completely surrounding the coil terminals.

  • Patent number: 4680543
Abstract: An electromagnetic pickup includes an insulating body that mounts a coil of wire surrounding a spool portion at one end of the body. A magnetic element is disposed within an axial passage through the body, including its spool portion. A sleeve-like molded plastic cover surrounds the spool portion and other portions of the body, and an encapsulation occupies the spaces within the cover that are not occupied by the body and elements mounted thereto. One end of the magnetic element extends to one end of the body and abuts the inner surface of the wall that encloses one end of the cover. The other end of the body is provided with a self-centering flange that engages the inner surface of the cover, and the other end of the cover is provided with the flange that is embedded in the encapsulation that also forms a seat external of the cover.

  • Patent number: 4677960
Abstract: A capacitive discharge pulsed plasma ignition system which is suitable for retrofitting to standard automobile engines, and easily adaptable to new engines, including diesel engines, which has been substantially improved by using a novel ultra-high efficiency ignition transformer (coil) (3) with an optimized high current and high voltage output. The ignition is preferably used with a high pulse rate, high efficiency, multiple pulse ignition box providing rapid pulsed plasma ignition sites. The coil (3) has a low winding turns ratio of about 40, low primary (1,11) and secondary (2,12) inductances and resistances, low loss in its core (3a), low secondary capacitance (5), and is used in conjunction with a capacitor (4) of capacitance between 1 and about 20 microfarads. The system uses voltage doubling at the spark gap (9) through coil/capacitor design combination to fire a wide spark gap (9) and provide a very high current.

The primary coil is wound around a center core made of grain oriented silicon steel, which forms a closed magnetic path for the magnetic flux produced by the coil unit together with a side core formed of non-grain oriented steel as one body. In the closed magnetic path there is provided an air gap. The current of the primary coils is controlled by transistors operated in response to gate signals furnished from an ignition control unit. The transistors are provided with a diode in the reverse parallel therewith. With these arrangements, the ignition coil assembly for an electronic distribution system can be miniaturized with the unfavorable influence of the magnetic inteference suppressed remarkably.
