When a pressure differential is applied to the permeable member to the paper web, moisture will be extracted from the web and passes through the permeable member.

  • Patent number: 4878299
Abstract: An insulating apparatus is disclosed for thermally insulating a dryer head journalled in a dryer section of a papermaking machine. The apparatus includes a stationary insulator having a disc-shaped configuration. The insulator defines a central bore for the rotatable reception therein of the journal. A peripheral seal extends circumferentially around the insulator for inhibiting the flow of convection currents past the periphery of the insulator thereby reducing thermal losses through the head.

  • Patent number: 4677761
Abstract: A sieve drum is disclosed that is particularly useful in textile processing equipment, such as a suction drum dryer, for heat-treating of continuous web material. The sieve drum is constructed having a single layer of a close mesh screen cylindrically formed between a pair of end heads to provide support for and transmit torque to web material being processed. The close mesh screen is composed of a plurality of longitudinal and transverse wire lengths of relatively heavy gauge than are sinusoidally woven into a lattice having a multitude of small interstitial openings each with rounded edges to provide smooth, unabrasive support to the web material. The multitude of small openings the aggregate area of which comprises less than 50% of the screen surface provides an even distribution of heated air over the surface of the drum and exposes a high percentage of the supported web to the air for a fast, energy efficient heat-treating process.

  • Patent number: 4538360
Abstract: Substantially uniform heat transfer through the cylindrical heat transfer wall of a steam heated hollow dryer drum is attained by longitudinal spoiler bars effecting turbulence of condensate throughout a major extent of the inner surface of the heat transfer wall, and condensate turbulence is generated in a narrow annular area from which a stationary siphon intake head withdraws the condensate from the steam chamber. A turbulence promoter is carried by the intake head and may comprise rigid or yieldably supported structure, e.g. a brush, rigid or flexible bar structure, an array of fingers, mounted on the downstream or off-running side of the intake head having regard to the direction of rotation of the drum.
