Abstract: An enhanced heat transfer process whereby solid particles are heated, dried, or cooled by a gas: Particles are repeatedly lifted and dropped as, for example, in flighted rotary drums. By forced recirculation, gas is passed through showering particles generally perpendicular to their plane of fall. Examples show gas forced to contact particles in this manner imparts an overall volumetric heat transfer coefficient to a rotary drum superior to that expected from classical literature or presently operating rotary drum heat exchangers. Disclosure teaches gas temperature adjustment between forced recirculations. Technique usage will reduce exchanger captial cost, increase energy efficiency, and reduce pollution problems. Also, prewetting of the particles in certain instances can be utilized to effect substantially increased pseudo volumetric heat transfer coefficients when cooling non-hygroscopic materials.

  • Patent number: 4029572
Abstract: A rotary drum air classifier apparatus for separating light and heavy materials introduced into the drum by conveyor means, means for producing a flow of air at relatively high velocity through the drum for entraining light materials, heating means encircling the drum for radiatively heating the drum and drying materials therein during the separation process, and means at one end of the drum for heating air as it enters the drum for further assisting in the drying process.

  • Patent number: 4025754
Abstract: An electrically heated dryer for articles comprises a drying container and an air duct leading thereto for directing air in a stream through the duct and into the container. An electric resistance heating element is provided in the duct and comprises an expanded resistance metal sheet of separated strands and connecting bridges with the strands at an angle to the sheet and generally parallel to each other. The element is serpentively arranged in the duct in successive substantially planar reaches spanning the duct with the strand surfaces of the upstream reaches arranged substantially parallel to the direction of air flow for streamline wiping action thereof by the air stream. A planar reach downstream of said upstream reaches is arranged with its strand surfaces substantially non-parallel to the direction of air stream flow to aid in mixing the heated air prior to delivery into the container.

  • Patent number: 3943637
Abstract: A readily portable apparatus for roasting, drying or otherwise treating grain or other similar particulate material on a continuous fully controlled basis. The material is metered into one end of a revolving drum containing structure for cascading the material through a high temperature gas stream generated by a heating device carried at the other end of the drum. The material gradually traverses the length of the drum while being subjected to such cascading and heating, and is then extracted or discharged out of the other end of the drum. The drum may be tilted a few degrees from the horizontal to provide precise control of the rate and time of traverse of the material through the drum. For purposes of quick and convenient access to the interior of the drum, the heating and material extracting devices are mounted on a hinged cover at the discharge end of the drum.
