Accordingly, a safety system can include a self-driving vehicle configured to transport a rider, a vehicle management system configured to autonomously drive the self-driving vehicle, a seat coupled to the self-driving vehicle, and a seat belt configured to alternatively have a buckled state and an unbuckled state. In many embodiments, the safety system includes a smoke detection system coupled to the self-driving vehicle and configured to detect smoke inside a cabin of the self-driving vehicle.

    Abstract: A system enhances safety of a dependent person, if a caregiver inadvertently leaves the person unattended in a parked vehicle, by sending an escalating alarm sequence to the caregiver and/or other responsive parties. The system continues to monitor, on an ongoing basis, the devices, and continually compares the current status of each one with its expected status based on the learned patterns. If the system detects a deviation between the current and expected status with respect to one or more of the devices, it computes an alarm level and a false positive score. If the combination of the alarm level and the false positive score is above a threshold value, the system initiates the alarm sequence. Note: a child should never be left unattended in a parked vehicle.

    Abstract: A device for detecting a being left within a vehicle includes a sensor that detects when a being (e.g. a pet, a child, etc.) is within a vehicle and the operator of the vehicle has moved away from the vehicle by more than, for example five feet. Upon detection of such, the device emits a sound to notify others nearby of the being that was left within the vehicle. The sound is preferably different than a sound of a typical vehicle theft alarm system. In a preferred embodiment, determination that the operator has left the vehicle is by a loss of a signal from a personal transmitter that is attached to the operator's key ring or worn by the operator. After moving away from the vehicle by more than five feet, the signal from the personal transmitter decreases and initiates determination if a being remains within the vehicle.

The key ring transceiver will continue to signal a distress mechanism until the baby buckle transceiver trigger has been reset by removing the child from the car seat.

The second wireless unit has attachment means for attachment to a seat belt associated with a child's car seat or a pet's collar. An activation sensor detects a disengagement action related to the vehicle, including powering-off of the vehicle ignition or unbuckling of the driver's seat belt. A distance sensor has a selected range. If the range is exceeded, an audible alarm is actuated from the first unit.

When the keychain fob moves outside of a signal range (e.g., 10 feet) while the tension mechanism remains in a depressed state, an alarm and/or red indicator light on the keychain fob is/are activated.
