  • Patent number: 7834740
Abstract: A method for receiving messages in an appliance such as a clock radio modified to retrieve messages from a remote computer, converting the retrieved messages into corresponding audio messages, generating a wake up signal to the user at a selected time in the radio appliance, starting the delivery of the audio messages from a speaker in the radio appliance in response to the generated wake up signal, and receiving audible commands in the radio from the user to control delivery of the messages. In a first embodiment, these method steps are performed in the radio appliance and, in a second embodiment, a remote computer performs all of the messages except delivery of the audio messages and receiving audible commands which occur at the appliance. Where two or more appliances are used, audio commands can cause the delivery of messages to stop in one appliance and resume in another appliance.

  • Patent number: 7760109
Abstract: A plurality of modules interact to form an adaptive network in which each module transmits and receives data signals indicative of proximity of objects. A central computer accumulates the data produced or received and relayed by each module for analyzing proximity responses to transmit through the adaptive network control signals to a selectively-addressed module to respond to computer analyzes of the data accumulated from modules forming the adaptive network. Interactions of local processors in modules that sense an intrusion determine the location and path of movements of the intruding object and control cameras in the modules to retrieve video images of the intruding object. Multiple operational frequencies in adaptive networks permit expansions by additional networks that each operate at separate radio frequencies to avoid overlapping interaction. Additional modules may be introduced into operating networks without knowing the operating frequency at the time of introduction.

Abstract: A system and method of pushing user-selected data items from a host system to a user's mobile data communication device upon detecting the occurrence of one or more user-defined event triggers is provided. The user may then move (or file) the data items to a particular folder within a folder hierarchy stored in the mobile data communication device, or may execute some other system operation on the data item. Software operating at the mobile device and the host system then synchronizes the folder hierarchy of the mobile device with a folder hierarchy of the host system, and any actions executed on the data items at the mobile device are then automatically replicated on the same data items stored at the host system, thus eliminating the need for the user to manually replicate actions at the host system that have been executed at the mobile data communication device.

  • Patent number: 7110790
Abstract: A method of providing access to network addresses for use in a mobile telecommunications device allowing navigation between different addresses and displaying of information therefrom, comprises compiling a first list of addresses bookmarked by a user and then compiling a second list of bookmarks selected on the basis of previous access by the user to said addresses via said first list. The second list may comprise the bookmarked addresses accessed most recently by the user, which will often be those most frequently used. However, the second list may instead comprise the addresses most frequently accessed by the user. The list may further contain entries corresponding to network addresses accessed by the user typing in the address. The provision of a second, selective list of addresses allows a user to access a favourite network address without scrolling through large numbers of bookmarks.

Abstract: The present invention contemplates an apparatus and a method for limiting the number of specified messages placed onto a network thus to improve network performance. An element management system, upon detecting that a defined threshold has been exceeded for specified types of messages, determines which network element is generating the greatest number of such messages. Thereafter, the element management system instructs the network element that is generating the largest number of alarm messages to cease transmitting a specified type of alarm message. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, if the event flow rate is still too high, the element management system may instruct the cross connect network element to stop sending all threshold types of alarms. Finally, if the event flow rate is still too high, the element management system may cause all QoS alarms from the one network element to not be transmitted.

Abstract: A system and method determines the environmental configuration of telecommunications equipment having interchangeable components to provide an alarm if an improper environmental configuration exists. A configuration engine associated with the network management system of the telecommunications equipment determines the environmental rating of components added to or removed from the telecommunications equipment by querying flash memory associated with the component. If components designed for controlled environmental conditions and components designed for uncontrolled environmental conditions are both present in the telecommunications equipment, then component engine 30 sets the alarm to alert the user of an improper environmental configuration.

Abstract: A system and method for pushing information from a host system to a mobile data communication device upon sensing a triggering event is disclosed. A redirector program operating at the host system enables a user to continuously redirect certain user-selected data items from the host system to the user's mobile data communication device upon detecting that one or more user-defined triggering events has occurred. The redirector program operates in connection with event-generating applications and repackaging systems at the host system to configure and detect a particular user-defined event, and then to repackage the user-selected data items in an electronic wrapper prior to pushing the data items to the mobile device.

Abstract: A global paging system and corresponding method are disclosed in which an originating user pages a receiving user in a different country without the paging message being broadcast in all areas. According to certain embodiments, the originating user E-mails a web site or server of the paging system paging information, with the server then transmitting the paging message over a packet-switched digital data network (e.g. the Internet) to a receiving or terminating web site or server located in the different country. In certain embodiments, the receiving user remotely inputs a designated country into the paging system so that when the receiving user is paged, the paging system first pages the receiving user in the designated country or area without broadcasting the paging message in other countries or areas.

Abstract: The invention provides a method and system to provide message notification to a subscriber having a wireless device, without the need to forward the message content with the notification. The message notification can be received within a wireless communication network such as a cellular telephone network. This message notification is forwarded to the wireless device of the subscriber and indicates that the subscriber has a waiting message. In another aspect of the invention, a message notification can be forwarded to a wireless device by receiving within a wireless communication network a message notification from a private base station that is connected into a premises based local area network. The premises based local area network receives the message from a message provider and stores it within a premises based to personal computer which generates the message notification. Messages may be any form of stored or recorded message, including e-mail, voice-mail and facsimile.

Abstract: In a pager which can select and set an incoming tone to be outputted from a speaker from patterns of a plurality of incoming tones when a signal is received by the operation of a jog dial, the tone or melody corresponding to the pattern of the incoming tone selected by the jog dial is outputted from a speaker under the control of a controller during the selecting operation of the incoming tone based on a pattern selection screen of the incoming tones which is displayed on a liquid crystal display unit and includes a plurality of selection items. Setting information of the pattern of the incoming tone selected by using the jog dial is stored into the RAM during the selecting operation of the incoming tone. When a signal is received, the controller allows the tone or melody as a set incoming tone to be outputted from the speaker on the basis of the setting information of the incoming tone stored in the RAM.
