Abstract: In a meeting or group event, people having a portable device, such as a cell phone or pager, may wish to be discretely notified when an important message is received, an urgent call comes in from a selected person or a selected group of people, or to be alerted to an upcoming important event without any audible alert to disturb the meeting or group event. To convey such a notification, a tactile alert is provided by vibrating the portable device according to a unique vibration pattern associated with the received communication. When a communication is received, a group identification (ID) is assigned based on the communication being a member of a classified group of source addresses. The portable device associates the group ID with a unique vibration pattern. To provide the alert, the portable device is vibrated according to the unique vibration pattern.

An enhanced paging system responsive to information sources and a selection device transmits information to a paging-capable device. The enhanced paging system comprises a storing means, a selecting means, a storage device, and a transmitter. Such a system can provide user-selected information to a paging-capable device, allowing the user to control what information will be sent and when the information will be sent. Intelligent-agent software can automatically search for and store information that would be of interest to the user and can alert the user that more detailed information is available. It can also send critical information to the user without user request.

Abstract: An ancillary signal indicator notifies the reception of a signal that is associated with a user. The ancillary signal indicator includes an imprint actuator configured to instigate a signal imprint mode. A receiver is configured to receive an imprint signal when in the signal imprint mode and a memory is configured to store an imprint signal. The ancillary signal indicator also includes a signal notifier configured to actuate when a received signal corresponds to the imprint signal.

Abstract: A selective calling receiver includes first and second tables and a control section. The first table stores in advance setting information for automatically stopping sound generation and switching to another alert operation. The second table stores in advance setting information for continuous sound generation. The control section generates an alert instruction determined on the basis of the setting information stored in the first table or that stored in the second table in response to a received radio signal containing an ID number. A method of switching the alert operation of the receiver is also disclosed.

Abstract: The communique system for cellular communication networks that operates with existing cellular communication networks to provide communique communication services to subscribers. The Communique can be unidirectional (broadcast) or bidirectional (interactive) in nature and the extent of the Communique can be network-wide broadcast or narrowcast, where cells and/or cell sectors are grouped to cover a predetermined geographic area or demographic population or subscriber interest group to transmit information to subscribers who populate the target audience for the narrowcast transmissions. The grouping of cells to form the communique coverage area for the narrowcast transmissions need not be contiguous and can comprise dynamic combinations of contiguous and non-contiguous cells as well as combinations of in-building wireless coverage areas, standard terrestrial cells, non-terrestrial cells, orchestrated in a hierarchical manner.

Abstract: There is provided a radio signal selective-calling receiver including (a) a display screen on which information are to be displayed, (b) a first memory for storing therein the information in the form of letters, and (c) a controller which, when the information is contained in a received signal, stores the information in the first memory and displays the information on the display screen in the form of a combination of letters and pictures, and which, when the information is not contained in a received signal, reads the information out of the first memory, converts the information into a combination of letters and pictures which combination can be displayed in one line on the display screen, and displays the thus converted combination of letters and pictures on the display screen.

Abstract: A paging transceiver and method for selectively paging provides a page to a paging transceiver but does not automatically provide an associated message. The paging transceiver receives the page and alerts the user that information is waiting and provides an identifier for the information. The user can then download or otherwise act on the information at a time and at a place convenient to the user. The paging system conserves air time and the paging transceiver conserves memory by not automatically receiving the associated information. The paging transceiver can receive transmissions during off-peak hours and has a timer which can be programmed so that information is delivered at a desired time. The paging transceiver allows a user to erase information stored at the paging transceiver and corresponding information stored at a remote system. When information is erased, the paging transceiver preferably keeps the identifier in memory and does not write over the message.

Abstract: A communication apparatus of the present invention displays, in its stand-by state, particular callers' name belonging to a preset group and the latest messages respectively corresponding to particular callers' names continuously on a display 6. On the receipt of a radio signal, a message conversion section 12 converts it to a received message. A comparison and controller 5 determines whether or not the converted message includes any one of the particular callers' names registered previously at a RAM (Random Access Memory) 8. If the answer of this decision is positive, the latest message corresponding to the particular caller's name and also stored in the RAM 8 is updated. Thereafter, a group name to which the particular caller's name belongs, all of the particular callers' names belonging to the group and the latest messages respectively corresponding to all of the particular callers' names are displayed on the display 6.

Abstract: An information transmission control apparatus for relaying information that allows a receiver's reply, from an information provider apparatus to a plurality of information reception apparatuses. The information transmission control apparatus sets different delay time for transmitting the information to each destination, based on random numbers or instructions from the information provider apparatus. Each time delay time for any of the destinations has elapsed, the information transmission control apparatus transmits the information to one or more information reception apparatuses that are the destination.
