  • Patent number: 9933298
Abstract: Light exposure from at least one light source is received with a light detector of a light monitor that includes at least one of (a) an output device and (b) a communication device transported by a user. The light detector converts the light exposure into an electrical signal, and the current time of day at which the light exposure is received is recorded. An instantaneous light exposure value is generated from the electrical signal, and a weighting function is applied to the instantaneous light exposure value as a function of the recorded time of day associated with the light exposure to produce a weighted instantaneous light exposure value. The weighted instantaneous light exposure value is integrated to produce a weighted cumulative luminous exposure value; and the weighted cumulative luminous exposure value is compared with an established luminous-exposure target.

Abstract: A security device for detecting the position of a manhole cover includes a pinger device, such as an acoustic pinger, that transmits a signal in the direction of the expected position of the manhole cover. The device takes energy samples to determine if the signal has been reflected back by the manhole cover. If the device determines the signal has not been reflected, it determines that the manhole cover has been moved from the expected position. In response, the device captures an image of an area around the expected position of the manhole cover. In addition, the device can notify a remote security station via a network that the manhole cover has been moved.

Abstract: A method of monitoring biometric data for an individual includes sensing a biometric parameter of the individual with a sensor carried by the individual. The method further comprises detecting that the individual has moved within a predetermined range of a fixed display device, and then wirelessly transmitting the sensed biometric parameter to a receiver associated with the fixed display device after the detection that the individual has moved within the predetermined range. The sensed biometric parameter of the individual is then displayed on the fixed display device. Thereafter, the fixed display device detects that the individual has moved outside of the predetermined range and removes the sensed biometric parameter of the individual from the fixed display device.

Abstract: Arrangements for measuring environmental conditions using a wireless sensor system may be presented. A threshold value may be determined for a sensor unit arranged in the wireless sensor system. The threshold value may be programmed in to the sensor unit. Quantitative sensor data may be measured about an ambient environmental condition. The measured quantitative sensor data may be compared to the programmed threshold value. The measured quantitative sensor data may be determined to exceed the programmed threshold value. Information indicative of the measured quantitative sensor data may be transmitted in response to determining that the measured quantitative sensor data exceeds the programmed threshold value.

Abstract: An appliance for conditioning air of an associated room and an associated method for controlling an air conditioner are disclosed, the controller selectively adjusting operation of the air conditioning appliance based on historical operating data. The controller adjusts a set-point of the appliance for a preselected period of time in response to the historical operating data of the appliance when the appliance operates in an energy savings mode. The controller is configured to receive and process data relating to the rate of change in the temperature. Further, an override feature may be included to maintain operation of the appliance in a normal operation mode if ambient temperature reaches a predetermined threshold value. Another feature is that the controller determines whether the compressor has been operational less than a preselected period of time and, if so, the compressor is operated until such time period has elapsed.

Abstract: A system and method for facilitating smart power meter monitoring are provided. The system for facilitating smart power meter monitoring includes a standards-based frame detector, a CDR, at least one 8b/10 encoder/decoder and data links to receive input signals and transmit output signals. The system provides for the conversion of incoming SerDes signals, like those that may be transmitted from an optical module, into UART signals that can be communicated to the smart power meter directly through a UART port of the meter. The method includes receiving SerDes signals from an optical module and converting the signals to UART signals. The UART signals are converted to comply with industry standard protocols for communication with the smart power meter. The UART signals are then transmitted to the smart power meter through the meter's UART port.
