  • Patent number: 8311737
Abstract: Automatic map generation is enabled by assigning priorities to each city in a list of cities under consideration for display on a map. A mapping engine determines a reference count for each city, indicating how frequently the city appears in one or more corpora of documents. Based on the reference count, and optionally upon other data such as population and political importance, a priority score is assigned to each city. Each city is then assigned to one of a plurality of categories according to the city's priority score. A map is then generated including cities from a specified highest number of categories. In one embodiment, cities from a higher-scored category are presented in a more significant way, e.g., in capital letters, bold type, etc., than are those in the next-highest scored category.

In one embodiment, the non-photographic cues may be previously stored in a database. In another embodiment, non-photographic cues may be extracted from at least one provided image of a geographic area. In a third embodiment, a sequence of non-photographic cues may be automatically extracted from at least one image of a geographic area and, if the sequence of non-photographic cues was not previously saved, the sequence of non-photographic cues may be saved, along with related information, for later use when the sequence of non-photographic cues corresponds to a desired location. The provided navigational information may be presented in a number of ways including a simplified map, textual instructions, or generated speech.

  • Patent number: 8031050
Abstract: Situational location dependent information is transmitted from a server data processing system to a receiving data processing system. The server data processing system communicates with the receiving data processing system in a manner by pushing content when appropriate. A candidate delivery event associated with a current positional attribute of the receiving data processing system is recognized and a situational location of the remote data processing system is determined. The candidate delivery event may be a location and/or direction change, device state change, or movement exceeding a movement tolerance. The situational location of the remote data processing system may be its location, direction, location and direction, proximity to a location, state change, or location and/or direction relative to a previous location and/or direction, or combinations thereof.

  • Patent number: 8019532
Abstract: The preferred embodiments of the present invention are directed to an improved mapping and navigational system. Specifically, the present invention is directed to a system for defining and assigning geographical boundaries to points of interests on a graphical map, where the geographical boundaries preferably correlate to spatially defined boundaries of the respective points of interests. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, the points of interest, along with the respective defined geographical boundaries, can be transferred from a personal computing device to a telecommunication device, such as a portable communication device, so as to be used for mapping purposes and to set off proximity alerts when the portable communication device, equipped with a GPS unit, enters or exits the geographical boundary of a particular point of interest.

  • Patent number: 7991546
Abstract: A display method and apparatus for a navigation system promotes to quickly search a desired on a map image with respect to an order of distance from a current vehicle position or other reference position. On the screen of the navigation system, it displays a specially designed screen to implement the city search operation which includes a state selection box and a city selection box. The navigation system detects the search direction specified by the user and moves the cursor to the location of the candidate city in response to every operation of the input device in the order of distance in the specified direction. Thus, the user is able to find the city by its relative location to the current vehicle position or other reference location, thereby enabling to quickly and intuitively search the target city.

Abstract: An information provision apparatus (1) comprises an observed-object detection apparatus (11) and an information output unit (41), and outputs from the information output unit (41) information on an observed object detected by the observed-object detection apparatus (11). The observed-object detection apparatus (11) comprises: a line-of-sight detector (21) for detecting a line of sight of a driver; an object detector (22) for detecting an object which is on a line of sight of a driver, based on the direction of the line of sight detected by the line-of-sight detector (21), on a current position of a vehicle, and on map information; and an observed-object calculator (23) for determining from objects detected by the object detector (22) an observed object observed by a driver, based on time for which the object is on a line of sight. This allows an object observed by a driver to be detected even if there is no trigger from the driver.

Abstract: A method of displaying a navigation map includes preprocessing photorealistic three- dimensional data offline. A location of a vehicle is automatically determined online. A portion of the preprocessed photorealistic three-dimensional data is identified that is associated with objects that are disposed within a geographic area. The geographic area includes the location of the vehicle. A nonphotorealistic image is rendered based on the identified portion of the preprocessed data. The nonphotorealistic image is electronically displayed to a user within the vehicle.
