Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes an apparatus body, a recording head, a head tank, a displacement member, an air release unit, a main tank, a liquid feed device, a body-side detector, and a supply controller. The supply controller controls a normal filling operation to start feeding liquid from the main tank to the head tank without opening the air release unit when a consumption amount of the liquid in the head tank is a threshold amount or greater, and stop feeding the liquid from the main tank to the head tank when the body-side detector detects an arrival of the displacement member at a normal fill position. When the body-side detector detects the displacement member at a start of the normal filling operation, the supply controller corrects the normal fill position to a position at which the liquid feed device can feed the liquid to the head tank.

Abstract: A method for measuring the volume of liquid, such as ink or solvent, remaining in a container, such as a replacement cartridge for a continuous ink jet printer, uses a reservoir enclosing an internal space having a variable volume for storage. The reservoir is adapted to provide a reduction in the pressure of the internal space, the reduction substantially monotonically increasing in magnitude as liquid is drawn into the printer, such that the volume of liquid remaining may be calculated from knowledge of the minimum withdrawal pressure required to draw further liquid from the reservoir into the printer. Containers for use with the method have a liquid dispensing port adapted to allow liquid to be dispensed when a withdrawal pressure at the exterior of the port is less than the pressure of the internal space and adapted to prevent the ingress of air into the internal space of the reservoir as liquid is dispensed.

Then, a print process for forcible detection is conducted in which the printing head and the carriage motor are controlled such that the printing head ejects ink while the carriage is moving in the enlarged movable range. Consequently, in a case where the forcible detection is requested, the ink remaining amount in the ink cartridge installed in the carriage can be detected regardless of the printing area based on the print data.

The head tank includes a liquid storage portion, a liquid level detection member, and an air release unit. When the feed device feeds liquid from the main tank to the head tank with an interior of the storage portion opened relative to an atmosphere and the detection member does not detect a liquid level of the liquid after a threshold time, the supply controller controls the air release unit to close the interior of the storage portion and determines whether a measurement value of a consumption amount of the liquid is a threshold value or lower. When the measurement value is the threshold value or lower, the supply controller performs a reverse feed control to drive the feed device to feed the liquid in reverse.

Abstract: A printer includes a container, a detecting unit and a management unit. The container is used for accommodating an imaging material, where the imaging material is a liquid material or a powdery material. The detecting unit is disposed on a surface of the container. The management unit is coupled to the detecting unit. The detecting unit detects a capacitance value to determine a remaining capacity of the container. When the remaining capacity is higher or lower than a threshold, the detecting unit transmits a trigger signal to the management unit. When the management unit receives the trigger signal, the management unit generates a notification.
