  • Patent number: 9001234
Abstract: The invention provides an imager readout architecture utilizing analog-to-digital converters (ADC), the architecture comprising a band-limited sigma delta modulator (SDM) ADC; and a serpentine readout, which can be configured to allow the band-limited SDM to multiplex between multiple columns by avoiding discontinuities at the edges of a row. SDM ADC image reconstruction artifacts are minimized using a modified serpentine read out methodology, the methodology comprising using primary and redundant slices with the serpentine read out in opposite directions and averaging the slices. Advantageously, the invention can be used to develop a read out integrated circuit (ROIC) for strained layer superlattice imagers (SLS) using sigma delta modulator (SDM) based analog to digital converters (SDM ADC).

  • Patent number: 8194166
Abstract: Multiple images are captured where the exposure times for some of the images overlap and the images are spatially overlapped. Charge packets are transferred from one or more portions of pixels after particular integration periods, thereby enabling the portion or portions of pixels to begin another integration period while one or more other portions of pixels continue to integrate charge. Charge packets may be binned during readout of the images from the image sensor. Comparison of two or more images having different lengths of overlapping or non-overlapping exposure periods provides motion information. The multiple images can then be aligned to compensate for motion between the images and assembled into a combined image with an improved signal to noise ratio and reduced motion blur.

Abstract: Preview mode low-resolution readouts occur, and then a shutter button on a camera is pressed, which causes an image sensor cleanout operation to occur. Following the cleanout, a high-resolution readout occurs. As rows of sensor values are read, the first rows are rows corresponding to a pre-defined horizontally-extending shielded area. There are no valid area sensor elements to either side of the horizontally-extending area. Data values read from the horizontally-extending area are used to determine optical black (OB) values that are then used to adjust the valid area values read out of the image sensor in that same frame. The same OB values are used throughout the adjusting of the valid area values of the entire frame. No values from the preview readouts are used in the OB value determination, so there is a clean break between the preview mode OB level and the high-resolution capture OB level.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an image processing apparatus and method enabling to correct for camera shake given in image capturing, a recording medium, and a program. Discrete data pieces indicating shifts are obtained. The discrete data pieces are interpolated to obtain data indicating a shift every line. By the interpolation, a correction is calculated every line on the basis of the corresponding shift. On the basis of the corrections, pixel data read positions are determined. Pixel data is read based on the determined read positions. When a pixel to be read overlaps two pixels, pixel data of the pixel to be read is produced (interpolated) from pixel data pieces. In this manner, the effects of camera shake are corrected. The present invention is applicable to video cameras.

Abstract: A CCD-based solid state image sensing (imaging) device and a driving method, enabling three-color still or video image signal charge processing without requiring a frame memory buffer. By using horizontal electrodes to selectively assert predetermined vertical-driving signals of the vertical CCDs, the vertical CCDs receive and vertically transmit the image signals (charges) of active pairs of vertically adjacent rows. Each active pair of adjacent rows is separated by (at least) two (a pair of) inactive adjacent rows, and the image signal (charges) of the active pair of adjacent rows represent all three colors (R, G, B) of one line (or one field) of real-image pixels. A horizontal CCD receives the selected image signals (charges) for each active row among the active pairs of rows, and outputs the image signals (charges) for each active row by conventional horizontal transmission to an interpolator adapted to continuously output three-color pixel signals (e.g., digital signals), e.g.

  • Patent number: 7456890
Abstract: An automatic exposure (AE) sensor includes a line-selecting circuit for line selection between horizontal lines and vertical lines, in addition to components of a typical AE sensor. The line-selecting circuit temporally filters a SYNC pulse for notifying a subsequent circuit about a pulse timing of an imaging signal to select a line to be read out and to cause the subsequent circuit to change an active pixel region. The number of selected lines is determined by an external input. The active pixel region is reduced when the AE sensor is incorporated in a device having a low performance CPU, thereby reducing load on the CPU. The active pixel region is increased when the AE sensor is incorporated in a device having a high performance CPU, thereby effectively using the CPU performance to achieve higher density control.

When a photographing command is input from the input unit by operation of user, the controller controls the iris drive unit so as to open and close the iris periodically for a preset time. Also, the control reads electric signals accumulated in the CCD imaging unit according to fields by light incident according to the opening of the iris, and then stores the read CCD data in the memory according to fields. Then, each CCD datum read from the CCD imaging unit is stored in the memory in the raw datum state without addition of an adjacent datum. Next, the controller generates a second odd field and a second even field by adding offset values, according to fields, to each CCD signal of the raw data state stored in the memory, and then forms a still image by combining the second odd field and the second even field.

  • Patent number: 7292274
Abstract: A CPU 14 drives the CCD2 by switching its driving mode between an omission readout mode and a summation readout mode. Summing the signal charge of pixels in the summation readout mode offers an increased sensitivity. The omission readout mode reduces smear. The summation readout mode calls for reading out to the vertical transfer paths all red pixel signal charges of the two-color filters aligned along each vertical transfer path. While charge readout voltages are applied to a specific system of charge readout electrode systems, vertical transfer is performed to sum pixels of a like color on each vertical transfer path. Charges of the green pixels are read to the vertical transfer paths so as not to be mixed with the red signal charges. By combining vertical transfer with selective readout, pixels of the respective same colors are summed on the vertical transfer paths or the horizontal transfer path.

  • Patent number: 7236196
Abstract: A solid-state image pickup apparatus includes a color filter having an R (red), G (green) and B (blue) vertical stripe pattern. During preliminary pickup, a signal feeding section feeds particular drive signals for reading signal charges out of only odd-numbered columns or even-numbered columns. As a result, the signal charges or image data reduced to, e.g., one-half in the horizontal direction are transferred along a horizontal transfer path. The signal feeding section feeds horizontal drive signals adjusted in timing to the horizontal transfer path, causing the above image data to be read out without varying reading frequency. This doubles the horizontal transfer rate to thereby improve the signal output rate during preliminary pickup despite high pixel density, and allows signals to be read out without effecting actual pickup to follow.
