  • Patent number: 8953685
Abstract: A decoder may apply a resource-focused interpolation mode to enable or disable interpolation or extrapolation of video units, such as frames, based on power and quality considerations. In one mode, interpolation may be disabled to conserve power when reference frames are not likely to produce satisfactory quality. In another mode, the threshold may be adjustable as a function of power saving requirements. This disclosure also describes selection of reference video frames to be used for interpolation or extrapolation of a video frame. A decoder may apply a quality-focused mode to select a reference frame based on quality criteria. The quality criteria may indicate a level of quality likely to be produced by a reference frame. If no reference frames satisfy the quality criteria, interpolation or extrapolation may be disabled. Display of an interpolated or extrapolated frame may be selectively enabled based on a quality analysis of the frame.

Abstract: A video display apparatus is provided wherein even for ones, such as 32 pull-down and 22 pull-down, in which since the motion range of an original material is wide, there is a high probability of degradation of the precision of detected vectors, the processing time is effectively used to enhance the precision of detected vectors, thereby generating interpolated pictures having higher qualities. The apparatus recalculates, based on motion vectors (Va) used in generating the first interpolated picture, motion vectors for use in the next interpolated picture generation, thereby detecting recalculated motion vectors having higher precision and less errors than the original motion vectors. A repeated-picture determining part utilizes an interval, during which identical pictures requiring no vector detections consecutively appear, to further improve the precision of motion vectors.

Abstract: Frame rate conversion may be implemented using motion estimation results. Specifically, as part of the motion estimation, pixels may be labeled based on the number of matching pixels in subsequent frames. For example, pixels may be labeled as to whether they have no matching pixels, one matching pixels, or multiple matching pixels. The motion estimation and pixel labeling may then be used to interpolate pixels for frame rate conversion.

  • Patent number: 8718448
Abstract: Some embodiments of the invention provide a media-editing application that performs frame rate conversion detection on a video. For a video that has been converted from one frame rate and format to another frame rate and format, the application detects the conversion method that has been used in the conversion of the video. Some embodiments perform this frame rate conversion detection by detecting patterns of repeating fields and/or frames in a video sequence created by the different conversion processes. Some embodiments compute (i) a frame difference value for each consecutive frames, (ii) a correlation score for the first and second fields of each frame, and (iii) a correlation score for the second field of each frame and the first field of a succeeding frame. Frame difference values are compared with each other to detect repeated frames and correlation scores are compared with each other to detect repeated fields.

Abstract: A method for de-interlacing interlaced video includes receiving a first video field and a second video field, generating a first video frame by inserting the first video field in the first video frame on every second line of the first video frame, and by inserting a first synthesized video field on the lines of the first video frame not populated by the first video field. The video data of the first synthesized video field is based on video data of the first and second video fields. A second video frame is generated by inserting the second video field in the first video frame on every second line of the second video frame and by inserting a second synthesized video field on the lines of the second video frame not populated by the second video field. Two de-interlaced video frames are output for every received interlaced video frame.

Abstract: An image processing apparatus according to the present invention extracts a characteristic value of a luminance in relation to respective fields of an input video, and determines the presence of a scene change between adjacent fields. A gamma curve is then generated on the basis of the magnitude of the characteristic value. When a difference in the characteristic value between fields is larger than a predetermined value and a scene change does not exist, the gamma curve to be applied to a subsequent field is modified such that the correction characteristic of the gamma curve does not vary rapidly. The luminance is then corrected using the modified gamma curve.

  • Patent number: 8643777
Abstract: A pixel interpolation process is based on detection of a potential edge in proximity to a pixel being estimated, and the angle thereof. The potential edge and its angle is determined based on filtering of offset or overlapping sets of lines from a pixel window centered around the pixel being estimated and then cross-correlating the filter results. The highest value in the correlation result values represents a potential edge in proximity to the pixel being estimated and the index of the highest value represents the angle of the potential edge. This information is used in conjunction with other information from the cross-correlation and analysis of the differences between pixels in proximity to verify the validity of the potential edge. If determined to be valid, a diagonal interpolation based on the edge and its angle is used to estimate the pixel value of the pixel. Otherwise, an alternate interpolation process, such as vertical interpolation, is used to estimate the pixel value for the pixel.

  • Patent number: 8619189
Abstract: An image processing apparatus, which converts a frame rate by dividing an input frame into sub-frames and outputting the sub-frames, includes a minimum value filter unit, a low-pass filter processing unit, a generation unit, and a switching unit. In an input frame, the minimum value filter unit selects a maximum value of minimum values from the minimum values of pixel values in each horizontal line in a predetermined area including peripheral pixels of a processing target pixel, and performs pre-processing to replace the processing target pixel with the maximum value. The low-pass filter processing unit performs low-pass filter processing on the pre-processed input frame and generates a first sub-frame. The generation unit generates a second sub-frame from the first sub-frame and the input frame. The switching unit switches the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame at predetermined timing and outputs a sub-frame.

  • Patent number: 8610826
Abstract: A video processing system may receive a current raw video frame and may estimate motion between the current frame and a previous frame to determine motion vectors (mv). Based on the same mvs, motion compensated (MC) noise reduction may be performed and MC frame rate conversion (FRC) may generate a new frame. The previous frame may be noise reduced and/or a raw video frame. A MC frame may be generated based on the previous video frame and the mvs. Noise reduction may comprise blending the current raw frame with the MC frame. A blending factor may be determined based on similarity between pixels of the current video frame and MC pixels of the previous frame. The mvs may be scaled for FRC. Noise reduction may be performed in parallel and/or prior to the FRC depending on whether raw or noise reduced frames are utilized.
