Stereoscopic Display Device Patents (Class 348/51)
  • Patent number: 9621870
Abstract: One or more techniques to reduce or eliminate the false depth of objects that move along the axis of ocular separation when displayed using time division multiplexing. Experiments can be performed to determine a perceived depth of an object moving with known velocity. Then, when rendering stereoscopic image pairs, the location of the object can be modified to change the perceived stereoscopic depth of the object to compensate for the false depth. In one technique, the images can be displayed with alternating left- and right-precedence to reduce the perception of false depth.

Abstract: A display image is superimposed and displayed on an outside image in a preferred manner. An optical system superimposes a display image displayed on a display device onto an outside image, and leads the display image to an eye of an observer. A display control unit controls the display size and the display position of the display image on the display device so that the display image is displayed in an image superimposition region (a flat region) detected from the outside image. For example, the display control unit controls the display state of the display image in accordance with the state of the image superimposition region in the outside image. Also, the display control unit performs control to selectively display the display image in a line-of-sight region or outside the line-of-sight region in accordance with the line of sight of the observer.

Abstract: The purpose of the present invention is to provide a display device in which the occurrence of the crosstalk can be suppressed. A display unit includes a display panel (12), a storage unit (54), a confirmation unit (56), and a correction unit (52). The display panel displays a synthetic image. The storage unit stores respective crosstalk levels set with respect to a plurality of areas (13a, 13b, 13c) that the display panel has. The confirmation unit that confirms in which one of the plurality of areas a pixel exists that displays an image that a viewer is supposed to see, among the plurality of images contained in the synthetic image. The correction unit reads the crosstalk level corresponding to the area, among the plurality of areas, in which the confirmation unit confirms the pixel displaying the image that a viewer is supposed to see exist, from the storage unit, and corrects the gray scale level data of the pixel displaying the image that a viewer is supposed to see, by using the crosstalk level.

Abstract: Techniques described herein provide a method for defining virtual content for real objects that are unknown or unidentified at the time of the development of the application for an augmented reality (AR) environment. For example, at the time of development of an AR application, the application developer may not know the context that the mobile device may operate in and consequently the types or classes of real object and the number of real objects that the AR application may encounter. In one embodiment, the mobile device may detect unknown objects from a physical scene. The mobile device may then associate an object template with the unknown object based on the physical attributes, such as height, shape, size, etc., associated with the unknown object. The mobile device may render a display object at the pose of the unknown object using at least one display property of the object template.

  • Patent number: 9600938
Abstract: Systems and methods directed to augmented reality environments on mobile devices having a single camera are disclosed. The single camera of the mobile device captures the images of one or more markers, and based on the relative size of the markers, determines the position of the camera and the absolute distance relative to the markers. The mobile device establishes a zero parallax plane set at the bottom of the 3D virtual object superimposed on the physical marker. Reduced alignment errors occur between the lower end of the virtual object and the real-world markers, and the virtual object appears to be standing on the real-world object. As a result, the augmented reality stereo experience for the user is more comfortable as the display is matched between virtual objects and the real objects to make the overall scene more realistic.

  • Patent number: 9594298
Abstract: A polarization conversion system (PCS) is located in the output light path of a projector. The PCS may include a polarizing beam splitter, a polarization rotating element, a reflecting element, and a polarization switch. Typically, a projector outputs randomly-polarized light. This light is input to the PCS, in which the PCS separates p-polarized light and s-polarized light at the polarizing beam splitter. P-polarized light is directed toward the polarization switch on a first path. The s-polarized light is passed on a second path through the polarization rotating element (e.g., a half-wave plate), thereby transforming it to p-polarized light. A reflecting element directs the transformed polarized light (now p-polarized) along the second path toward the polarization switch. The first and second light paths are ultimately directed toward a projection screen to collectively form a brighter screen image in cinematic applications utilizing polarized light for three-dimensional viewing.

Abstract: A virtual object placed in a three-dimensional virtual space and a user interface are stereoscopically displayed on an upper LCD of a game apparatus. An image used for adjusting a display position of the user interface in the depth direction is displayed on a lower LCD. A user adjusts a UI adjustment slider by using a touch pen to adjust the parallax of the user interface. This allows the adjustment of the parallax of the user interface separately from the parallax of the three-dimensional virtual space, and thereby the depth perception of the user interface can be adjusted.

Abstract: An image display device displays a plurality of image elements of a left-view image and a plurality of image elements of a right-view image on a display in alternation in a horizontal direction, and displays an image element of a black image between each adjacent pairing of an image element of the left-view image and an image element of the right-view image. The image display device uses a parallax barrier to ensure that a left eye of a viewer only views the left-view image and that a right eye of the viewer only views the right-view image. Through the above configuration the image display device reduces occurrence of cross-talk regardless of position of the viewer or shape of the parallax barrier, and improves image quality of a stereoscopic image.
