Abstract: Head-mounted displays (HMDs) for virtual reality (VR) provide backlit illumination when the LCD rows corresponding to a non-dominant eye of the viewer are being updated. For example, when a human viewer operates a VR computer in the form of a smartphone with an LCD screen embedded in specialized goggles (e.g., Google Cardboard), the human viewer may specify that his/her right eye is dominant. In this case, the VR computer times the backlit illumination to be activated when the rows of LCD pixels in the field of view of the non-dominant, i.e., left, eye are being updated. When the rows of LCD pixels in the field of view of the dominant, i.e., right eye are being updated, the VR computer deactivates the backlit illumination.

Abstract: Disclosed embodiments provide techniques for adjusting the Z-index of an augmented reality (AR) object. When an AR object covers a first object, the user gazes at the first object for a predetermined amount of time, and then the AR object Z-index is adjusted with respect to the Z-index of the first object, such that the AR object is now rendered behind the first object, such that the user can continue to view the first object. The first object can be a physical object, a virtual object, or another augmented reality object. This allows the user to conveniently continue viewing the first object. Embodiments provide techniques for reverting the Z-index of the AR object at a later time when the user is ready to respond to the AR object. In this way, the user experience for augmented reality systems is enhanced.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosed apparatuses, methods and systems provide elimination of distortion induced by an optical system that reflects light from an image source. An inverse mapping of the distortion is created for the optical system. The display system applies the inverse mapping to an image prior to display to introduce a distortion to the displayed image that is the inverse of the distortion introduced by the optical system. As a result, the distortion in the displayed image is canceled by the distortion of the optical element providing the user with an image that is substantially distortion free.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to continuous and/or binocular time warping methods to account for head movement of the user without having to re-render a displayed image. Continuous time warping allows for transformation of an image from a first perspective to a second perspective of the viewer without having to re-render the image from the second perspective. Binocular time warp refers to the late-frame time warp used in connection with a display device including a left display unit for the left eye and a right display unit for the right eye where the late-frame time warp is performed separately for the left display unit and the right display unit. Warped images are sent to the left and the right display units where photons are generated and emitted toward respective eyes of the viewer, thereby displaying an image on the left and the right display units at the same time.
