Abstract: The backlight unit (49) of a display device (69) having a liquid crystal display panel (59) is provided with a chassis (41), a diffusion plate (43) supported by the chassis, and a light source for irradiating the diffusion plate with light. A reflective sheet (42) for reflecting light towards the diffusion plate is combined with a light-emitting module (MJ), which is a light source. An inclined surface (42a) such that the light emitted from the light-emitting module in the lateral direction is reflected toward the diffusion plate is formed on the peripheral edge of the reflective sheet. The inclined surface is subjected to a reflectance reduction treatment. The reflectance reduction treatment involves forming a plurality of small holes (46A) in the inclined surface, for example.

Abstract: In a digital video surveillance system, a number of processing stages are employed to identify foreground regions representing moving objects in a video sequence. An object tracking stage (5) is also provided in order to identify a correspondence between candidate objects in a current frame and those that have already been identified in one or more previous frames. In this way, it is possible to calculate the path taken by the or each foreground object and to record this path information in a trajectory database. In order to improve tracking performance, the object tracking stage (5) employs a state transitional object management scheme which determines whether or not a particular object is tracked. The path information generated by the object tracking stage (5) can be displayed on a video monitor (15) of the surveillance system and/or made available to high level applications (7).

Abstract: A method and apparatus for an analog-to-digital video signal converter. The converter is controlled by a clock with controllable frequency and phase for sampling an analog signal. A circuit corrects the clock frequency using a period of a columnar frame differences as a function of columnar location. The sampling clock frequency is changed by an amount dependent on the period of the columnar differences. A second measure of the difference between successive frames is computed for a sequence of clock phases. The frequency of the clock is verified using a characteristic of the second measure. The characteristic can be the ratio of the maximum to the minimum of the second measure over selected clock phases. Other characteristics can be used such as a difference of a maximum and a minimum measure.

Abstract: Fluorescent tubes are arranged such that their arrangement spaces gradually become wider in central area than in edge areas, fluorescent tubes located in the vicinity of the central area of an arrangement direction are bent into chevron-shapes such that the central parts of the longitudinal directions of the fluorescent tubes become crests which provide access to a diffusion plate, respective two adjacent fluorescent tubes which are straight tubes are connected to one another, thereby constituting pseudo U-shaped tubes, and an AC power is supplied through terminals lined up along one side of a direct-type backlight device. A reflector plate is bent so as to match with the curvature of the bent fluorescent tubes, and is formed with a protrusion which allows the fluorescent tubes located in the vicinity of the central area of the arrangement direction to be raised so as to protrude toward a diffusion plate.
