  • Patent number: 7959305
Abstract: A digital micromirror projection display system is disclosed in which “off” pixel light is recaptured and recycled. In the disclosed system, a digital micromirror device directs incident light for “on” pixels in the image to be displayed through projection lenses to a projection screen. The digital micromirror device directs incident light for “off” pixels back toward the light source for recapture by a light integrator. Both the incident and projected light can pass through a rear group of projection lenses, with the first projection lens being disposed near the digital micromirror device. A mirror directs the incident light toward the digital micromirror device, and the “off” pixel light from the digital micromirror device toward the light integrator. As a result, “off” pixel light can be recycled without degrading image contrast, in a manner that can place fast projection lenses close to the digital micromirror device to save cost.

  • Patent number: 7517093
Abstract: An object of the invention is to provide method of operating a projection-type system, which method is capable of suppressing flicker and minimizing gradation disorder at the same time by superimposing a pulse current on a d.c. lamp current to stabilize arc while synchronizing the superimposition of the pulse current on the d.c. lamp current with a predetermined segment. The method of operating a projection-type system configured to pass light emitted from a high-pressure discharge lamp lit by d.c. lighting through divided plural color segments sequentially to project an image onto a screen, includes superimposing a pulse current on a d.c. lamp current in the high-pressure discharge lamp in synchronism with at least one specific color segment.

  • Patent number: 7483086
Abstract: An illumination optical system includes a light source for emitting a plurality of different colors of light, a plurality of rotating optical scanners, and a plurality of scanning lenses. Each of the optical scanners has a reflecting surface that is formed helically around a cylindrical body. The different colors of light enter the respective reflecting surfaces in the direction parallel to the rotation axis, are reflected therefrom, and pass through the scanning lenses, so that each color of light is magnified and then scans the region to be illuminated sequentially. This makes it possible to provide an illumination optical system that can improve scanning linearity, lower noise because of its reduced wind resistance, and achieve reduction in the cost and power consumption.

Abstract: Embodiments of a system that includes one or more integrated circuits are described. During operation, the system receives a sequence of video images, which include a video image, and predicts an increase in an intensity setting of a light source (which is configured to illuminate a display) when the video image is to be displayed based on the color saturation. Then, the system selectively adjusts pixels in the video image associated with a white color filter based on a color saturation of at least a portion of the video image, where the display configured to display the video image includes pixels associated with one or more additional color filters and pixels associated with the white color filter. Next, the system incrementally applies the increase in the intensity setting across at least a subset of the sequence of video images.
