  • Patent number: 6593982
Abstract: A liquid crystal display includes a first substrate with pixel electrodes, and a second substrate with a common electrode facing the first substrate. The common electrode has depression patterns corresponding to the pixel electrodes. The side wall of each depression pattern is at an angle of 30-120° with respect to the first substrate. The depression patterns of the common electrode are formed through making depression patterns at color filters. In this structure, the liquid crystal display bears wide viewing angle and good picture quality.

Abstract: The present invention provides an electrooptical device wherein in a thin-film transistor (TFT) array substrate of the electrooptical device, a scanning line, a drain electrode, a first light shield layer, and a data line are laminated over a channel region of a TFT and a second light shield layer is laminated beneath the channel region. A side wall formation trench is formed beside the channel region of the TFT, and in the side wall formation trench a conductive layer having a light shield property is concurrently formed with the first light shield layer thereby a light shield side wall is formed. By three-dimensionally blocking the entry of light towards the channel region, obliquely or laterally incident light is prevented from entering the channel region of a pixel switching TFT, and the TFT is free from erratic operations and reliability degradation.

Abstract: Disclosed is an active matrix liquid crystal display device, comprising: a pixel matrix; a data driver circuit for driving data lines; and gate driver circuits for driving gate lines. These constituting elements are all manufactured on the same substrate, and the data driver circuit and the gate driver circuits are formed outside a sealing region located outside the pixel matrix. In this case, all data lines formed between the data driver circuit and the pixel matrix are substantially covered by at least one metal layer which is composed of a metal different from that of the data lines, wherein the metal layer is adapted to perform both light shielding and reduction of electrostatic coupling capacitance between the data lines. Thus, it is possible to improve image quality by reducing noise generated following voltage fluctuation between data lines without providing any new metal layers for shielding.

  • Patent number: 6580473
Abstract: Active matrix display devices having improved opening and contrast ratios utilize light blocking lines to improve display contrast ratios yet position the light blocking lines on the same level of metallization as the gate lines to thereby limit parasitic capacitive coupling between the data lines and the pixel electrodes. The light blocking lines are also positioned on only one side of the data lines so that improvements in the display's opening ratio can also be achieved. The light blocking lines are preferably patterned so that no overlap occurs between a display's data lines and the light blocking lines. The elimination of overlap reduces the step height in the display's pixel electrodes and thereby reduces the extent of disclination of the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal material extending opposite the pixel electrodes.

The black matrix comprises an array of opaque conductive elements with one such element being above each TFT. The black matrix is incorporated into the TFT structure. By using highly conductive material for the black matrix elements their thickness is held to a minimum, thereby minimizing their impact on planarity. Optionally, this highly conductive layer may be laminated with layers of a non-reflective conductor that makes good ohmic contact to silicon. In one embodiment, metal filled via holes are added that connect the TFTs to the transparent conductive pixel control elements by way of the black matrix layer. In another embodiment, the black matrix layer is connected to be in parallel with the gate electrode, thereby reducing the series resistance of the latter. In the liquid crystal display device, a metal light shielding layer is formed in a pattern reverse to a metal interconnecting layer 13 on the metal -interconnecting layer on the driving substrate side. The potential of the metal light shielding layer is set to the same potential as the potential Vss of the metal interconnecting layer. On the metal light shielding layer is provided a transparent electrode through a flattening film. The transparent electrode is set to the same potential (=the potential of auxiliary capacitor or capacitance Cs) as a counter electrode on the counter substrate side.

Further, a second light shielding film (3) is formed to cover the channel region (1c) and the first light shielding film (7), thereby to prevent the surface of the first light shielding film (7) from direct exposure to light.

Abstract: A projection display device is provided which includes a border structure comprising a dam around the active display area of the device which both shields any underlying drive circuitry from the incidental light by reflecting this light-while passively controlling its birefringence such that this region appears dark to the viewer when no drive voltages are being applied. Preferably, the dam is positioned between the glue seal and the active region, the thickness of the dam being such as to allow a thin layer of LC material on top of the dam for compensated LC effects and in such case, the border structure between the glue seal and the active region is also effective to keep the glue from seeping into the active region when the seal line is squeezed during assembly. With a high birefringence material and an external compensation foil, a high degree of light extinction is achieved over the border. Also, formation of the border on the active plate means that no critical alignment of the passive plate is needed.
