Abstract: This invention relates to a liquid crystal device wherein the surface profile of a surface alignment grating stabilizes at least one stable state. The invention involves the introduction or breaks (34, 36, 38) or discontinuities into the grating (10) to divide the grating into a plurality of groove segments. The breaks are discontinuities in the grating in the groove direction, the grating having substantially the same groove direction on each side of the break. The introduction of breaks prevent free movement of defects along the groove of the grating and therefore help to stabilize the desired liquid crystal configuration, either a Defect state or a Continuous state. Suitable breaks involve gaps (34) in the groove ridges (30), necks (36) between the groove ridges (30) and slips or relative displacement (38) of the grating.

Abstract: An optical sheet has an isotropic medium layer and an anisotropic medium layer. The isotropic medium layer is made of an optically isotropic medium and has a first surface and ridge-shaped projections. The projections are formed on the first surface, arranged in a first direction and extend in a second direction intersecting at right angles to the first direction. Each projection has a cross section shaped like a segment of a circle. The anisotropic medium layer is made of an optically uniaxial medium and has a second surface and groove-shaped recesses. The recesses are made in the second surface, arranged in the first direction and extend in the second direction. Each recesses has a cross section shaped like a segment of a circle. The isotropic and the anisotropic medium layers are laid one on the other, with the respective projections firmly fitted in the respective recesses.

Abstract: Contact holes and dummy holes are formed in the gate insulating film and the interlayer insulating film located in the non-display region of an array board by dry etching. Since the opening area ratio of the array board is increased, the variation amount of luminescence of etching gas during dry etching is large, and thus a just etching timing can be easily detected by detecting this variation amount.

Abstract: A transflective liquid crystal display (TLCD) using separate transmissive (T) and reflective (R) cells in which two liquid crystal materials with different birefringence changes are used. The birefringence change of the R region is half of the birefringence change of the T region. In this case, a single cell gap is possible and identical transmittance and reflectance for R and T is obtained. It is applicable to various reflective LC modes, and the fabrication methods are simple.
