  • Publication number: 20140139754
Abstract: A light guide plate receives light, which is emitted from a light source, and emits the light from a light emitting surface. A prism sheet reflects light at a predetermined angle among the light emitted from the light emitting surface, allows the reflected light to enter the light guide plate, and transmits light at another angle thereamong. Between a 1/4 wavelength plate and a reflection-type liquid crystal display element, a polarization control element is provided in parallel to the light emitting surface. The polarization control element splits the light, which is emitted from the 1/4 wavelength plate, into first polarized light allowed to transmit as illumination light that enters the reflection-type liquid crystal display element and second polarized light reflected so as to enter the light guide plate 3, and reflects the light modulated and emitted by the reflection-type liquid crystal display element.

Abstract: Device for generating polarized electromagnetic radiation has a diffuser and a polarizer. The diffuser is arranged in a beam path of the electromagnetic radiation. The polarizer is arranged in the beam path of the electromagnetic radiation, to be precise downstream of the diffuser in the direction of propagation of the electromagnetic radiation. The polarizer has a reflective side facing the diffuser, said reflective side being at least partly reflective to the electromagnetic radiation. The polarizer transmits electromagnetic radiation having a predefined polarization and reflects electromagnetic radiation not having the predefined polarization back to the diffuser. The diffuser scatters, in a non-polarization-maintaining manner, at least one portion of the reflected-back electromagnetic radiation not having the predefined polarization.

Abstract: The frontlight illumination system is intended for enhancing illumination of a reflective display having pixels arranged in a matrix pattern and using monochromatic laser lights as light sources. The unit contains a network of light-distributing planar ridge waveguides with holograms arranged in a matrix pattern that corresponds to the matrix pattern of the reflective display. The light-distributing holograms of the system are formed on opposite sides of each core of respective light-distributing planar ridge waveguides. Neighboring holograms located on opposite sides of the core are combined into pairs and are arranged on each core in positions at which they interact with a predetermined phase shift that doubles the intensity of light directed to the reflective display and extinguishes light directed to the external surface.
