    Abstract: A method of making a lens having adjustable optical power is disclosed. The lens is adjustable by relative lateral translation of at least two lens elements. The method may comprise providing a function yielding optical properties of the lens from starting geometries for the lens elements; refining the function to approximate required gaze angle optical performance over a range of said lateral translation; and using the refined function to derive geometries for making the lens elements. The function may comprise first and second functional parts respectively for the lens elements, and the method comprises using the function to derive geometries for making the lens elements, wherein the function relates optical path difference to a position across the lens elements, and the rate of change of curvature of the first functional part with position is different to the rate of change of curvature of the second functional part with position. There is also disclosed a lens having adjustable optical power.

    Abstract: For manufacturing ophthalmic lenses and other optical form bodies made of plastic material, plastic form parts are used which are made by non-cutting shaping and are then further worked by mechanical production steps. Said plastic form parts are circular blanks (1) made of two different plastic materials which are firmly joined to each other. Thereby, an interior lens element (2) that consists of a high-quality material is concentrically surrounded by a ring fixture (3) which consists of a low priced material. Either surface of the lens element (2) may feature any given geometry. During mechanical working, the ring fixture (3) is used for mounting as well as for depositing and, in addition, for stabilizing the workpiece (9). For this reason it is partially maintained throughout the mechanical working and is cut off at the end only.

    Abstract: A low inventory method of making eyeglasses. Two lens elements having special complementary surfaces are provided. These lens elements can be positioned relative to each other to provide wide ranges of focus correction and astigmatism correction. Various preferred embodiments of the invention are described. In one embodiment the required inventory is only identical sets of two complementary lenses for providing correction for almost all needed eye correction for a typical population. In this embodiment, the lens units are first adjusted relative to each other to provide a desired focusing power. Astigmatism may be corrected by a small adjustment in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction followed by a rotation of the two lenses about the axis of the two lenses. When the adjustments have been made the two lenses are fixed with respect to each other and installed in eyeglass frames. Cutting to the shape of the eyeglass frames can occur either before or after the fixing.

    Abstract: A variable focus lens system for eyeglasses is disclosed. The system consists of superimposed first and second thin lenses, simulating Alvarez lenses, with one side of each lens divided into Fresnel zones and zone boundaries. The second lens element is slidable for focus adjustment. The Fresnel zone boundary surfaces are made parallel to the user's optical line of sight to reduce visual obstructions, and the zone boundaries may be restricted to areas near the lens periphery to further reduce visual obstructions. The Fresnel zone boundaries may follow paths which enable equal, constant step size for the boundaries along their lengths. An opaque light absorbing coating may be applied to the zone boundaries to reduce light scattering. A fixed prescription lens, having the user's distance and astigmatism corrections, is superimposed on the first and second lens elements.
