  • Patent number: 7347562
Abstract: A two-panel projection display system includes a color wheel having color filter segments that transmit light having a secondary color, namely cyan, magenta, and yellow, made up of two primary colors. A primary color separator, such as a second color wheel, a transflective dichroic beamsplitter, or a color-sensitive polarizing switch separates the secondary color beam into a first polarized primary color beam and a second polarized primary color beam, which are directed to first and second imager panels. A beam combiner combines the first polarized primary color beam from the first imager and the second polarized primary color beam from the second imager to form a projection beam. Accordingly, any two primary colors can be imaged at the same time enabling the system to be white point balanced.

The present invention can eliminate the reflective light on the internal optical surface of the optical system, using the phase plate and linear polarizer, in the color sequential driving of illuminating at least two colors on the single display panel at a random moment. The phase plate converts the incident light from a linearly polarized light to a circularly polarized light, and vice versa. And, the linear polarizer transmits the linearly polarized light of the incident light in the specific direction. Therefore, the present invention prevents the degradation of color purity generated from the mutual intrusion of light of at least two colors, thereby enhancing quality of color image.

Abstract: Light emitted from a lamp enters a color wheel having a region for allowing a predetermined color to pass therethrough, is reflected on a mirror, and enters a DMD. After this, the light is reflected by the DMD and enters a color sensor, which then detects the color of the transmitting light. A projection apparatus automatically synchronizes the control on the rotation of the color wheel and the control on the proceeding direction of the transmitting light by the DMD, based on a color time-division pattern of the transmitting light detected by the color sensor.

Abstract: The object is to provide a display device that is capable of displaying an image with high luminance and a wide color reproduction range under simple control. The display device includes a light source device that emits first to fourth illumination lights, a spatial light modulator that modulates the illumination lights, and a controller. The controller allows the first and the second illumination lights to time-sequentially enter an identical illumination area of the spatial light modulator, and allows the third and the fourth illumination lights to individually enter the spatial light modulator so as to avoid them from being superimposed on the first and the second illumination lights.

  • Patent number: 7268961
Abstract: In a color wheel comprising a plurality of color filter segments arranged so as to form a disk and a support member fixed to the color filter segments, the color filter segments are each outlined only by a circular arc and two straight lines passing through the center of the disk. Consequently, each of the color filter segments is prepared by cutting the material only to the circular arc and the two straight lines, thereby simplifying the production process. And, the support member can be duly and surely positioned such that the center of the support member is set to coincide with the intersecting point of the two straight lines. Thus, the positional accuracy, the component cost reduction, and the production cost reduction can be achieved at the same time.
