  • Patent number: 7352496
Abstract: An image scanning device and a shading compensation method include reading out a second region of a reference white sheet spaced by a predetermined distance from a white roller prior to reading out a to-be-scanned document to generate a reference shading compensation value; comparing the generated reference shading compensation value and a stored initial sheet shading compensation value for the second region to calculate a final shading compensation value of a first region of the white roller; and compensating for image data of the read document according to the calculated final shading compensation value. Accordingly, the present invention generates a shading profile and compensates for shading distortions according to characteristic changes of an image readout unit, such as a CIS, thereby enabling more precise image data to be obtained.

  • Patent number: 7349133
Abstract: An image reading apparatus that detects failure in the white LEDs constituting a white LED array. Failure in the white LEDs is detected by comparison between a prescribed current threshold and the current running in the LED array detected by an image reading apparatus controller when the white LED array composed of plural LED blocks connected in parallel, each LED block being composed of plural LEDs connected in series, is powered for failure detection. This failure check is conducted by checking LEDs for failure in each of the LED blocks constituting the LED array. Image reading is not permitted when faulty LEDs are detected in two neighboring LED blocks.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of generating intensity measurement correction coefficients for a pixel in a focal plane array of an optical sensor, wherein the correction coefficients are used to correct an intensity measurement generated by the pixel responsive to illumination. The method includes the steps of accessing past values of the correction coefficients, receiving a pixel intensity measurement indicative of illumination characterized by a reference energy density function, generating a modeled noise signal, and generating present values of the correction coefficients. The present values of the correction coefficients are generated based on the past values of the correction coefficients, the pixel intensity measurement, the modeled noise signal, and the reference energy density function.

  • Patent number: 7224497
Abstract: The object of the invention is to extend the life of the light source while uniformizing the illuminance intensity in the main scanning direction. The invention is based on a light source of image reading apparatus comprised of film layers laminated on a transparent substrate in the order of a transparent electrode, an area light emitter and a metal electrode, and emitting light by impressing a specific voltage on these two electrodes. And an area light emitter column configured by arranging area light emitters corresponding to each color of R (red), G (green) and B (blue) in the sub scanning direction, or a monochrome area light emitter is arranged repeatedly in the main scanning direction. Accordingly, even when somewhere in the light emitting element has a defect like the film thickness is thin, the current gathering at this point with the low resistance value becomes a very small volume. Therefore, it would not occur that the film burns out from here.

Abstract: In an image reading apparatus using a contact image sensor, an area light source for reading an image from a film original is provided. The area light source has a light guide plate and an LED device in the center of a side surface on the shorter side of the plate. In the LED device, red-, green-, and blue-LED chips are mounted on the same package and red-, green-, and blue-light are switched and lit. A white bottom plate covers the bottom surface of the light guide plate and a white case frame covers the four side surfaces. A scattering sheet is adhered to the upper surface of the white case frame, that is, a light emitting surface. Abstract: Two illuminating units 2L and 2R, each having a light guide provided at its one end, with a light-emitting source, are provided. Each illuminating unit is arranged in such a manner that light emitted from its emission plane irradiates the same area of a document-reading plane and the light-emitting source is situated on the opposite side in a main-scanning direction (i.e. the longitudinal direction). By alternately arranging two illuminating units, it is possible to offset characteristics of each illuminating unit so that uniformity and equalization of light intensity distribution can be improved. Since each-illuminating unit is arranged so that its emission plane is symmetric relative to a plane at right angles to the document-reading surface, it is possible to reduce shading that is produced on a document surface when the document surface is not flat.
