Patent number: 7990649Abstract: A method is presented for setting a wrap angle of a read/write head having a servo element and multiple read elements, where the servo element and the read elements can detect a servo signal. The method includes moving a sequential information storage medium having a longitudinal axis and a servo band encoded therein adjacent to the read/write head. The longitudinal axis and a flat upper surface of the read write head define the wrap angle. The method further includes detecting the servo signal using one of the read elements. If the read element is unable to detect the servo signal, then the remaining read elements are sensed to detect the servo signal.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2009Date of Patent: August 2, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Nhan Xuan Bui, Reed Alan Hancock, Robert Allen Hutchins, Eiji Ogura, Kazuhiro Tsuruta

Patent number: 7961430Abstract: A tape path control system and related method for controlling the position of a tape medium in the tape drive. The tape path includes a first tape guide roller, a second tape guide roller spaced from the first roller, and a transducing head situated between the first and second rollers. The first and second rollers may be large and closely spaced, with the second tape guide roller being spaced from the first roller at a roller diameter/center-to-center spacing ratio of between approximately 1:1-1:2 while still accommodating the transducing head therebetween. A precision alignment system is associated with the second roller. When operable, the precision alignment system allows the second roller to be adjustably aligned relative to the first roller in order to control lateral tape movement when a tape medium streams across the rollers in operative engagement with the transducing head.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2006Date of Patent: June 14, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Robert G. Patent number: 7800863Abstract: A tape guide is provided for use in routing a tape media, used in a computer or other application, along a pre-specified path of travel. The tape guide is oriented along a vertical axis and comprises three sections or components joined together to form an integral guide structure. Upper and lower sections both comprise frustoconical sections, the respective dimensions of the two frustoconical sections being equal to one another in a useful embodiment. A tape is wrapped around the guide, whereby the tape is directed along its path of travel. As the tape moves, the upper and lower sections apply downwardly and upwardly directed biasing forces, respectively, to maintain the moving tape in an equilibrium position in order to avoid contact between the edges of the tape and any guide structure.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2005Date of Patent: September 21, 2010Assignee: Oracle America, Inc.Inventor: Venkataraman Kartik

Patent number: 7733598Abstract: A data storage tape cartridge and tape drive is disclosed in which drive mounted guides are received in a cutout of a data storage cartridge. A read/write head is moved through an access opening into engagement with a data storage tape between the drive mounted guides. The drive mounted guides closely control lateral positioning of the tape as it passes across the read/write head. The read/write head and the drive mounted guides are moved relative to each other and into engagement with the tape.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2006Date of Patent: June 8, 2010Assignee: Oracle America, Inc.Inventors: John D. Publication number: 20100039731Abstract: Various embodiments of an apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for reducing stiction in a magnetic tape device. For example, according to one representative embodiment, a magnetic head assembly for reducing stiction includes a magnetic head that is communicable in data exchange communication with tape in contact with the magnetic head. The magnetic head assembly also includes a tape lifter that is movable relative to the magnetic head. More specifically, the tape lifter is movable between a first position away from the tape and a second position in contact with the tape. In the first position, tape is contactable with the magnetic head and in the second position, tape is not contactable with the magnetic head. The magnetic head assembly further includes an actuator made at least partially of a memory shape alloy. The actuator is coupled to the tape lifter and the memory shape alloy is resiliently deformable to move the tape lifter between the first and second positions.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 14, 2008Publication date: February 18, 2010Inventors: Kent P. Publication number: 20090201608Abstract: In one embodiment, a tape movement constraint for a tape drive system, comprises a tiltable tape roller bearing having a grooved surface adapted to contact and engage a surface of the tape as the roller barrel rotates, and an actuator adapted to pivot the roller bearing surface when the actuator is actuated, to control the lateral position of a tape. In operation, in one embodiment, a roller barrel of the tiltable roller bearing is biased in a first position on a pivot axis, using magnetic attraction between a movable magnet and a return path structure of magnetically permeable material. The roller barrel is pivoted on the pivot axis by conducting current through a fixed coil to generate a magnetic field which is conducted by the return path structure to interact with the magnetic field of the magnet. At least a portion of any air bearing between the moving tape and the barrel surface is quenched using grooves formed in the barrel surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 8, 2008Publication date: August 13, 2009Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Armando Jesus Argumedo, Nhan Xuan Bui, William Marvin Dyer, Reed Alan Hancock, David Howard Flores Harper, Wayne Isami Imaino, Kevin Bruce Judd

Patent number: 7570457Abstract: A magnetic recording head is provided comprising a flat contour head having a deposited closure. An ion-milled trench or recess is provided near the substrate edge to create a lip or wear zone between the trench edge and the substrate/gap interface. As the tape passes over the head, the lip begins to wear and acquires a bevel. After up to a few hundred hours of runtime, the bevel spans the entire length of the lip after which the bevel length remains constant resulting in a constant rate of head wear. The width of the lip or wear zone is chosen such that head wear chases gap and transducer wear resulting in reduced recession of the transducer from the recording tape.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2005Date of Patent: August 4, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Robert Glenn Biskeborn
