Patent number: 7420758Abstract: Disclosed is a head system including a plurality of recording heads for azimuth recording. The system includes a first recording head having a plurality of magnetic gaps having a first azimuth angle, and a second recording head having a plurality of magnetic gaps having a second azimuth angle different from the first azimuth angle. After first magnetization patterns are formed on a recording medium by the first recording head, second magnetization patterns are formed by overwriting side edge portions in the formation direction of the first magnetization patterns by the second recording head. This makes it possible to prevent the worsening of the accuracy of the magnetization pattern width due to a relative height stagger (offset) between the heads, to thereby enhance the accuracy of the magnetization pattern width, and to achieve high-density recording.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 2004Date of Patent: September 2, 2008Assignee: Sony CorporationInventors: Yasutoshi Inoue, Hiroaki Hida, Toshiaki Wakita, Tetsuro Makise, Ichiro Hashimoto

Patent number: 7408736Abstract: A magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus is disclosed that is arranged to receive a tape cassette accommodating a tape recording medium that is selectively loaded thereto. The loaded tape cassette is selected from plural types of tape cassettes accommodating tape recording media with differing widths. The magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus includes a rotating drum unit with a rotating head, and a loading mechanism that pulls the tape recording medium of the loaded tape cassette out of the loaded tape cassette, winds the tape recording medium of the loaded tape cassette around the rotating drum unit over a winding angle, and forms a tape path. The loading mechanism adjusts the winding angle for winding the tape recording medium of the loaded tape cassette according to the width of the tape recording medium of the loaded tape cassette.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2005Date of Patent: August 5, 2008Assignee: Mitsumi Electric Co., Ltd.Inventors: Ryoichi Annen, Kazuya Tamura, Kazuhide Murase

Patent number: 7342742Abstract: A magnetic recording and reproduction apparatus includes a rotatable head cylinder for recording information to, and/or reproducing information from, a magnetic tape; a tape pull-out member for pulling out the magnetic tape; and a guide member for guiding the tape pull-out member. The tape pull-out member is engaged with a groove formed in the guide member. The tape pull-out member is movable between a first position and a second position along the groove. The first position is a position at which information recording to, and information reproduction from, the magnetic tape is possible. The second position is a position at which information recording to, and information reproduction from, the magnetic tape is impossible. The rotatable head cylinder is provided on a cylinder holding member integrally formed with the guide member. A profile of the groove is continuous with no gap.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 2004Date of Patent: March 11, 2008Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventors: Akio Konishi, Koichiro Hirabayashi, Yoshiyuki Saito, Hiroshi Kurumatani

Patent number: 6822820Abstract: A data tape drive for recording information on the data tape of a tape cartridge has a transducer head with air bleed slots that define side walls, a tape guide, and a device for detecting damage to the transducer head and tape guide. The damage detection device has a conductor loop that is located along the outer edges of the air bleed slots and tape guide for detecting any brittle fracture damage that may be present. The conductor loop is a thin filament of wire that is preferably attached to the ends of the side walls. When the transducer head or tape guide experiences a fracture, such as a fracture in one of the side walls, the delicate filament breaks and forms an open circuit. The open circuit in the conductor loop is detected by the data tape drive so that remedial actions can be taken.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2000Date of Patent: November 23, 2004Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Daniel J. Patent number: 6288864Abstract: In a method of calibrating a helical scan magnetic tape drive, a dual scan calibration tape having a calibration stripe is loaded into the tape drive. As a head traverses differing paths along the calibration stripe, a series of calibration signal waveforms is obtained. For each calibration signal waveform in the series, a voltage measurement is made at a predetermined position within each waveform. A maximum one of the voltage measurements is used to generate a measured overlap scale factor (MOV) indicative of an overlap of the read head relative to the calibration stripe. As a subsequent calibration stripe on the calibration tape is read in a dual scan calibration mode, the measured overlap scale factor is utilized to generate a track position error vector. The track position error vector is used to adjust a tape path guide of the tape drive.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1997Date of Patent: September 11, 2001Assignee: Exabyte CorporationInventors: William Widener, Timothy C.
