Patent number: 7256964Abstract: To lower the coefficient of static friction of the circumferential surface of the guide or drum constituting the magnetic tape apparatus. A flat portion is formed between peak portions. The peak portions and flat portion are formed so that the relationship: a?<a is satisfied, where “a” represents a distance between the ridges of the peak portions, i.e., pitch of the peak portions, and “a?” represents a bottom width of the peak portions. When this relationship is satisfied between the peak portions and the flat portion, the total area of the meniscuses formed between the magnetic tape and the peak portions can be reduced, thus making it possible to lower the coefficient of static friction.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2004Date of Patent: August 14, 2007Assignee: Sony CorporationInventor: Hiroyuki Osaki

Patent number: 6922315Abstract: According to a first aspect the present invention is related to a head drum arrangement allowing a much easier mounting of the rotary transformer. The head drum arrangement comprises a non-rotating lower drum and a rotating upper drum, which are connected by a shaft fixed in the lower drum. The upper drum is mounted on the shaft by a bearing and preferably by two ball bearings. A rotary transformer is arranged between the lower drum and the upper drum having a fixed stator and a rotor rotating jointly with the upper drum. The rotor is non-positively held in its position by the magnetic force of a permanent magnet accommodated in the upper drum.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2001Date of Patent: July 26, 2005Assignee: Thomson Licensing S.A.Inventors: Philippe Berthaud, Jean-Pierre Collin, Michel Perrot

Patent number: 6822820Abstract: A data tape drive for recording information on the data tape of a tape cartridge has a transducer head with air bleed slots that define side walls, a tape guide, and a device for detecting damage to the transducer head and tape guide. The damage detection device has a conductor loop that is located along the outer edges of the air bleed slots and tape guide for detecting any brittle fracture damage that may be present. The conductor loop is a thin filament of wire that is preferably attached to the ends of the side walls. When the transducer head or tape guide experiences a fracture, such as a fracture in one of the side walls, the delicate filament breaks and forms an open circuit. The open circuit in the conductor loop is detected by the data tape drive so that remedial actions can be taken.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2000Date of Patent: November 23, 2004Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Daniel J. Patent number: 6819529Abstract: A head drum device of the present invention prevents a magnetic tape (2) from clinging to the head drum device (3) due to electrostatic charge by using a carbon-containing synthetic resin as the material of an upper drum (33) in order to reduce the manufacturing cost for the upper drum. Also, setting the outside diameter of the upper drum (33) smaller than that of an intermediate drum (32) eliminates the need for a high-level of manufacturing precision in the manufacture of the upper drum (33). Thus, it is possible to reduce the manufacturing cost for the upper drum (33).Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2002Date of Patent: November 16, 2004Assignee: Sony CorporationInventors: Tadashi Ooami, Junya Endo, Masanori Maehara, Masahiro Kiko, Tamami Mishiro, Kentaro Shingai

Patent number: 6751057Abstract: A guide plate is provided along the respective outer periphery of rotary and fixed drums on the upstream side relative to an inlet portion where a magnetic tape starts making contact with a magnetic head on the rotary drum, an airflow attendant on the rotation of the rotary drum is stripped by a wedge-shaped edge on the guide plate and is released to the outer periphery side by a guide surface of the guide plate, and the airflow flowing in the axial direction into the space between the tape and the rotary drum is restrained by an extended portion of the guide plate. In a rotary head drum device for a magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus, formation of an excess air film near an inlet portion of the tape is restrained, and stable recording and reproducing can be achieved without raising the tape tension, thereby enhancing the life of the tape.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2002Date of Patent: June 15, 2004Assignee: Sony CorporationInventors: Motoyoshi Fujimori, Ichiro Hashimoto, Akira Itou

Patent number: 6590741Abstract: A magnetic head for attachment to a drum includes two magnetic cores butted against each other, and a gap is formed therebetween. A glass is bonded to the upper butted portion. A winding is provided on the magnetic cores, and electromagnetic transformation is carried out. On the sliding face of the magnetic head, two grooves and are formed with the gap positioned therebetween at positions symmetrical with each other in a rotation direction of the drum to provide good contact between the magnetic head and a magnetic tape or other magnetic medium. A protective film is formed on the surface of the sliding face. The magnetic head generates a negative pressure by virtue of the grooves formed in the sliding face in the rotation direction of the drum, thereby improving contact between the magnetic head and the magnetic tape.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2000Date of Patent: July 8, 2003Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kenji Hasegawa, Hiroyuki Hasegawa, Eisuke Sawai, Ken Takahashi, Hiromi Takeda
