Patent number: 6411865Abstract: The system uses graph theory to define busline arrangements as a series of vertices and edges, wherein the vertices include the number of busses in the system and the edges include disconnect circuit branches connecting the individual vertices. A particular system configuration, selected by the system operator, determines the status (open or closed) of the various disconnect branches. A processor establishes an incident graph matrix, including positions of all the vertices and edges. The matrix is modified in accordance with graph theory and the condition of the disconnect switches. Graph operations are performed to produce a resulting matrix which defines vertices and the edges incident thereon into zones of protection. Fault analysis in the busline can then be performed in accordance with each zone of protection.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2000Date of Patent: June 25, 2002Assignee: Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Bai-Lin Qin, Armando Guzman-Casillas

Patent number: 6404610Abstract: A temperature sensing system for monitoring and controlling temperatures of various peripheral devices inside a notebook type of computer. The temperature sensing system uses thermistor as temperature sensor. The thermistor is positioned around a peripheral device and formed a potential divider circuit with another resistor. Next, the voltage produced by the divider circuit is fed to a voltage detection pin of a chipset. Inside the chipset, the divider voltage can be compared with a reference so that appropriate action can be taken to cool down particular peripheral device. In addition, the temperature sensor of this invention can be placed anywhere inside a notebook computer including the area surrounding the peripheral device or even inside the peripheral device. Moreover, no additional control chips for operating those temperature sensors are needed, and hence production cost can be lowered.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 2000Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: Via Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Nai-Shung Chang

Patent number: 6388858Abstract: A circuit breaker has a set of remotely controllable secondary contacts connected in series with the main contacts which provide overcurrent protection. The secondary contacts are opened and closed by a latching solenoid having a close coil and an open coil which are separately connected to switched terminals of a first switch. Patent number: 6385020Abstract: A hemispherical grain (HSG) capacitor having HSGs on at least a part of the surface of capacitor lower electrodes, and a method of forming the same. In the capacitor, lower electrodes are formed of at least two amorphous silicon layers including an amorphous silicon layer doped with a high concentration of impurities and an amorphous silicon layer doped with a low concentration of impurities, and HSGs are formed, wherein the size of the hemispherical grains can be adjusted such that the size of HSGs formed on the inner surface of a U-shaped lower electrode or on the top of a stacked lower electrode is larger than that of HSGs formed on the outer surface of the U-shaped lower electrode or on the sidews of the stacked lower electrode. Patent number: 6373675Abstract: In a closing magnetic circuit, when a movable contact is in contact with a fixed contact and a switching device is closed, N and S poles of a permanent magnet attract the fixed member in a direction in which the movable contact is pressed against the fixed contact. In an opening magnetic circuit, when the movable contact is separated from the fixed contact and the switching device is open, one of the N and S poles of the permanent magnet attracts the fixed member in a direction in which the movable contact is separated from the fixed contact. Publication number: 20020033048Abstract: A micro-opto-electro-mechanical transducer in which an optical element is angularly positioned by electrical field coupling. Movable electrodes of two orthogonally disposed, differential variable capacitors are coupled to the optical element constrained by structural means to angular displacement around two free-axes of rotation. Cooperating stationary capacitor electrodes with surface contoured regions facing the movable electrodes are affixed to the structural means. A thin dielectric layer of high permittivity material provides a region of fixed spacing between the capacitor electrodes. The surface contoured regions constrain the approach of the movable electrodes with angular displacement of the optical element. Both the open-loop gain and the equilibrium voltage-angle response of the transducer is largely independent of displacement. Electrostatic force feedback maintains the optical element at voltage programmed positions of static equilibrium over a wide angular range of tip and tilt.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 18, 2001Publication date: March 21, 2002Inventors: Robert B. Patent number: 6344959Abstract: The presently disclosed method and apparatus provides the sensing of an output voltage of a charge pump without applying a load to the output stage. In the charge pump the voltage change which occurs across a capacitor of a stage of the charge pump when the charge pump transfers charge to the next stage is proportional to the difference between the voltage at the output of the charge pump under load, and the voltage which will be developed at the output of the charge pump with no load. There is an interval in the timing of the charge pump cycle after the first stage capacitor has transferred its charge to a second stage capacitor where the high side of the first capacitor has not yet been connected to the line voltage. During this interval the charge pump undervoltage detection circuit measures the voltage at the high side of the capacitor and compares this measured voltage to a reference voltage.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1999Date of Patent: February 5, 2002Assignee: Unitrode CorporationInventor: Ciro W. Patent number: 6295188Abstract: A method of synchronously closing a hydraulically-controlled circuit breaker connected in an AC network, the method including, for each pole of the circuit breaker, using a microcontroller connected to the hydraulic control system via static switches to perform the following steps: on receiving a closure order, controlling the static switches to close the pole; waiting for a signal indicating that the pole has moved a certain distance between its open position and its closed position; on receiving the signal controlling the static switches to cause the pole to open; detecting when the network voltage passes through a zero value; and waiting for a certain amount of time to elapse measured from the detection prior to controlling the static switches to cause the pole to close, the time lapse being such that full closure of the pole takes place at a moment that coincides with the instant at which the network voltage reaches a characteristic value depending on the nature of the load to be connected.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1999Date of Patent: September 25, 2001Assignee: Alstom T&D SAInventor: Gérard Ebersohl

Patent number: 6292340Abstract: This invention relates to an arrangement for sensing a change in pressure from a first state to a second state. This is function in a grid system which has a fault undetected by flow measurement devices. This arrangement consisting of remote monitors powered by a communication system with a stand alone power supply which will sense a significant change in pressure. The monitors, with time delay built in, transmit this change in status to a central host computer for grid system analysis. In normal means for stabilizing the grid system, a remote signal is sent from the host computer to an isolation device for isolating the fault from the remainder of the network system. Subsequently, the host computer notifies the operating department with written notice of the isolation action.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Electrical Materials CompanyInventors: Timothy M. Publication number: 20010020850Abstract: A capacitance measurement circuit detects a change in capacitance between a variable capacitor and a fixed reference capacitor in a bridge network and provides feedback current to null-balance the bridge. An error signal is amplified at high gain by a differential integrator having an output that is converted to a high-frequency stream of digital pulses of constant amplitude and width. The pulse stream is integrated to provide a voltage to control feedback current used to balance the bridge. The average pulse density per unit time, or the frequency of the digital pulses, is linearly proportional to a change in capacitance of said variable capacitor to high accuracy over a wide dynamic range.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 24, 2001Publication date: September 13, 2001Inventors: Robert B.
