The sleeve has a series of grooves, and the adapter has tabs which move within the grooves. The adapter and the shaft move axially relative to each other in order to extend the length of the handle. In another embodiment, the handle construction has an adapter, an inner sleeve, and a shell. The adapter and inner sleeve each have tabs which mate with grooves in the inner sleeve and the shell, respectively. The adapter may be rigidly coupled to the shaft with threads, or may have a switch operated opening mechanism.

In another embodiment, an even number of magnetic polarities may be made, alternating in the senses of their magnetic poles. The combination of polyhedral shape and magnetization provides versatile positioning of the lamp. Within the magnetic housing is a unique polyhedral reflector, which is easily re-oriented by the user to direct light from the lamp bulb in a desired direction. The interior surface of the utility lamp housing is adapted to hold the polyhedral reflector adjustably in a number of discrete aiming directions.

    Abstract: A self-positioning light fixture with a stabilizing base comprises a self-righting member in the shape of a spherical segment and a separate lamp supporting member with connecting means to join the two together and to separate each from the other. When separated, a filling neck or spout on the top wall of the self-righting member is exposed through which fluid ballast material such as sand may be poured into the cavity of the self-righting member. The filling neck has external threads to engage the internal threads of a recess opening to the bottom wall of the lamp supporting member when received therein to thereby couple the two members together. Additional fastening screws are provided to more securely connect the self-righting member to the lamp supporting member. A shock absorbing mechanism is provided comprising mounting springs to secure the lamp bulb socket member to the lamp supporting member and thereby protect it from shocks transmitted to the lamp fixture.

    Abstract: A combined fluorescent lamp and spotlight which is simple to manufacture and assemble has a trough-shaped body member of generally rectangular section with tubular cylindrical projections at its ends and a chassis member received on the trough-shaped body member and closing the open side thereof, the chassis member mounting a bulb holder for a bulb, fluorescent tube mounting members, a printed circuit board, a switch and battery contacts such that all the electrical components requiring connection together are all provided on the chassis member which can be completely wired before being engaged on the trough-shaped body member to close the open side thereof.

    Abstract: A high intensity lamp system for fireman's use and similar users provides a specially shaped base with an angle-adjustment of a reflector-equipped high intensity lamp extending from a junction box on the base; the base special shape includes at one end a "J"-section channel hook for hanging the system on a door or the like free of twisting; an arcuate cutout centrally in the edge of "J"-section channel hook provides for hanging the system on a nail or the like; at the opposite end of the base a planar projection of the base beyond the junction box provides for mounting the system by clamping or by slipping into a slot. The junction box receives a twist-lock type electrical supply plug in a socket for power input and provides two output sockets, eliminating need for extra extension cords. Special provisions permit adjusting the angle of the lamp head without danger of burning the hands of the user.

A bulb cage or guard is removably clamped to the handle to protectively enclose a bulb inserted in the receptacle. Formed integrally with the bulb guard is a cord storage section about which the length of cord extending from the handle can be wound. A stand is formed at the free end of the bulb guard permitting the utility lamp to be stood on end on a horizontal surface. Also, a hook is swively mounted to the top of the bulb guard so that the lamp can be hung from an elevated projection and a magnet is mounted to the cord storage section enabling lamp to be suspended from a ferromagnetic object.
