  • Patent number: 6884867
Abstract: A process for activating polymer including preconditioning a diluent by heating it to a high temperature and then mixing the heated diluent with the polymer to form a blend having a high polymer content (e.g., about 5% polymer and 95% hot diluent). The blend is activated and then diluted by mixing it with a cold or cool diluent in order to provide an output stream of about 0.25-2% polymer having a relatively low temperature. The high temperature and high polymer content enables a continuous process, as distinguished from batch processes used heretofore which required substantial holding time in an aging tank. The reduction of the temperature of the blend by mixing it with cold or cool diluent prevents damage to heat-sensitive polymers.

  • Publication number: 20040154985
Abstract: An apparatus and method for producing particles using supercritical fluid with enhanced mixing. The process includes a vessel having an inner surface defining a chamber. A high-speed shear or turbulent mixer is incorporated inside the vessel in order to create a region of enhanced mixing (mixing zone). A supercritical fluid pump communicates with the first inlet, and supplies supercritical fluid into the mixing zone through the first inlet. A solution pump communicates with the second inlet, and supplies solution into the mixing zone through the second inlet. A mixer assembly includes a motor drive and a rotor. The rotor is in the mixing zone and can mix the solution and the supercritical fluid. Particles are produced when the solution and the supercritical fluid are pumped into the mixing zone while the rotor is mixing. The design of the mixer and the direction of the flow of materials into the chamber creates a plug flow in the mixing zone.

  • Patent number: 6752529
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for processing materials employ two cylindrical members, one mounted within the other, defining an annular processing chamber. Preferably, the outer member is stationery (stator), while the inner rotates (rotor). The radial spacing between the stator inner surface and the rotor outer surface is equal to or less than the back-to-back radial thicknesses of the two laminar boundary layers formed on the two surfaces by the material being processed. The surfaces are made smooth, as by buffing to a finish of not more than 10 microinches. This structure inhibits formation of Taylor vortices in the processing passage, which cause unstable flow and consequent incomplete mixing. Preferably, the relative velocity between rotor and stator surfaces is at least 1.2 meters per second. The surfaces may be coated with catalysts. Transducers may be provided to apply processing energy, such as microwave, light or ultrasonic waves, through the stator wall.

  • Patent number: 6588082
Abstract: A twin shaft “compulsory mixer” having a capacity in the range of twelve cubic yards has a static mixing chamber bottom defined from two horizontally disposed and interfering cylindrical shapes. Two centrally disposed elongate rectilinear discharge gates are each defined from an end in the bottom of the static mixing chamber to abut at the middle of the static mixing chamber. At the middle bottom of the static mixing chamber, a tensioning rod is placed extending normally across the abutted ends of the two rectilinear slots. Two eccentrically mounted elongate rectilinear gates are mounted for movement into and out of sealing relation to the rectilinear slot centrally of the static mixing chamber. These gates are mounted centrally of the mixing chamber to a pillow block and spherical bearing arrangement and actuated at the respective static mixer chamber ends by conventional piston drives. Reducing the gates in length, reduces deflection making chamber sealing possible.

Abstract: A method for monitoring and improving the performance of a chemical manufacturing process by monitoring transients associated with the operation of process equipment located dowstream of upstream equipment is disclosed. Transients on signals such as the motor current to downstream powder feeding equipment provide early indications of changes in chemical process performance which can then be corrected by altering chemical manufacturing process conditions.

Abstract: A method of densifying a bulk particulate material includes at least partially confining the bulk particulate material, and rotating a rotatable member submerged under the bulk particulate material about an axis of rotation to cause movement of the material particles essentially towards or away from the axis or rotation, thereby to provide a densified bulk particulate material. The method is particularly suitable for densifying silica fume. The invention extends to apparatus for densifying a bulk particulate material.

Abstract: A method and device are described for mixing an oil-containing liquid stored in an oil storage tank to determine the monetary value of said oil-containing liquid contained therein. The method comprises rotating an agitating device in the oil-containing liquid; providing a mixed oil-containing liquid; and determining the monetary value of the oil in said oil-containing liquid. The device includes a shaft disposed in the tank and extending along a central axis of the tank. The shaft includes at least one arm structure extending outward from the shaft so that when the shaft is rotated, the arm structure causes the liquid components to be mixed. The shaft is rotated by a power actuating device which may be a fuel powered motor, an electric powered motor a wind turbine or a manual hand crank.

Abstract: On-site blending and distribution of oxide abrasives with other constituents as used in semiconductor applications. Constituent blending is accomplished through weighing components individually into a blending tank. Some components may be added by injection or weight. Alternatively blends can be made to varying concentrations by passing the blended oxide solution in a closed circulation loop through a calibrated encapsulated torroid coil to measure electrical conductivity. The resulting conductivity output may be used to add one or more component.

  • Patent number: 6551655
Abstract: This invention provides a mixing chamber that utilizes several tined cylinders to convey materials through the mixing chamber for applying liquid additives to the materials. Each of the tined cylinders includes a number of spring biased tines extending from the surface of the cylinder. The tined cylinders are arranged within the mixing chamber such that, as the tined cylinders rotate about an axis, the spring biased tines engage the materials within the mixing chamber and “sweep” them along towards a discharge opening of the mixing chamber. As the materials are conveyed through the mixing chamber, an additive liquid, typically containing various chemicals, colorants, dies, and/or paints, is sprayed onto the materials. In this manner, liquid additives are applied to materials more evenly and more thoroughly, resulting in a more consistent finished product.

  • Patent number: 6550955
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and device for making liquid dosage formulations from solid dosage forms, and the pharmaceutical compositions produced therefrom. The solid dosage forms are tablets and capsules. The device comprises a single-use mixing and dosing cup having an abrasive interior surface and may include a mixing blade attached to an external motor. A liquid dosage formulation is prepared by combining a solid dosage form of a pharmaceutical medicament and an aqueous diluent in the mixing and dosing cup. The solid dosage form is rapidly broken down into its constituent particulates using agitation, disintegration and abrasion. The resultant liquid mixture is flavored and thickened to suit the needs of individual patients. The mixing and dosing cup is designed to allow for the administration of the liquid formulation directly to the patient.
