    Abstract: A magneto-optical recording head comprises a magnetic coil formed on a lower surface of a transparent substrate opposed to a magneto-optical disk. A heat sink layer is provided at the outside of the magnetic coil on the lower surface. An objective lens is supported on an upper surface of the transparent substrate. The heat, which is generated by the magnetic coil, is released via the heat sink layer to the space between the magneto-optical disk and the substrate. The release of the heat is facilitated by the air stream which is generated by the rotation of the magneto-optical disk. The heat can be effectively released from the magnetic coil without inhibiting optical characteristics of the objective lens.

With this structure, when recording and reproducing information based on the thermal distribution of the recording medium heated by the heat sources, the thermal damage on the recording medium can be suppressed, and the likelihood of such problem that the recording medium is heated too much and the information recorded in the heated portion are erased can be prevented.

The beam condensed on the beam spot leaks as a near field wave and is propagated to a magneto-optic recording film of a recording/reproducing disk, and information is OAM-recorded cooperatively with the magnetic field of a coil. In reproduction of the information, a leakage magnetic flux that comes from the recording film is detected by a magnetic sensor.

A combination of a chemical-mechanical contouring operation and the lack of any intervening low thermal conductivity material adjacent the coil effectively produces an insulation layer that is thin but has a contour with a very smooth surface, resulting in a highly compact multiple-level coil.

Reflected light from the reproducing magnetic layer reaches a photodetector to generate a reproduced signal.

Since output signals of the magnetic sensor are symmetrical between preceding and following stages and distortion is reduced, the amount of jitter during conversion into a digital signal is reduced, so that information can be correctly reproduced.
