Abstract: A media gateway controller (MGC) is described herein that implements a shared risk group package to control and prevent a media gateway (MG) from establishing redundant links like a primary link and a secondary link that use resources that share the same risk of failure. Essentially, the MGC uses the shared risk group package to control which resources like ephemeral terminations are used by the MG to establish the primary link and the secondary link such that if any of the resources associated with the primary link fail then the secondary link remains operational within the MG and if any of the resources associated with the secondary link fail then the primary link remains operational within the MG.

  • Publication number: 20140036661
Abstract: A hierarchical structure network of devices is formed. A group of devices may be grouped together to form a domain. A plurality of domains formed in a hierarchical structure forms a hierarchical network. Traffic flow topology may be updated only within the same domain that topology changes. In one embodiment, traffic flow topology is updated only in a parent domain and a child domain when the status of a link connecting the two domain changes. Thus, other domains within the network have no need to update the traffic flow topology and remain agnostic to the traffic flow updates. Thus, responsiveness of the network to topology changes is improved. Multiple links may each carry traffic if multiple links exist between nodes. As such, a network of robust redundant interconnections with active links is formed that react quickly to network topology changes and that uses the interconnection links in an efficient manner.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a path for a sliced tunnel that extends from a head-end node to a tail-end node is computed. The sliced tunnel is furcated into a plurality of child tunnels at one or more fork nodes located downstream from the head-end node. Each child tunnel carries a portion of traffic for the sliced tunnel. The sliced tunnel is merged at one or more merge nodes located downstream from respective ones of the fork nodes. The portions of traffic on the child tunnels are aggregated at the merge nodes. The head-end node sends a signaling message to establish the sliced tunnel along the computed path. Abstract: Failover of VPN traffic between MPLS tunnels may be accelerated by determining a main and a standby MPLS tunnel for each VPN and passing both the main and standby MPLS tunnel information to the forwarding plane of a network element configured to implement the VPN. In the event of failover of a main MPLS tunnel interface, the forwarding plane may be instructed to use the standby MPLS tunnel instead of the main MPLS tunnel. Since the standby MPLS tunnel has already been determined, and information associated with the standby MPLS tunnel has already been provided to the forwarding plane, it is not necessary to recompute a new MPLS tunnel or reprogram the forwarding plane using the new MPLS tunnel information. By removing control plane operations and control plane-forwarding plane interaction from the handling of failovers, the failover recovery time may be accelerated to under 50 ms, to thereby enable VPN connections to handle time sensitive traffic.

Abstract: A method for improving the reliability and performance of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) networks where digital certificates are necessary for message authentication and some messages may be lost in transmission. The method uses Forward Error Correcting (FEC) codes to encode a digital certificate into multiple segments, and attaches one or more segment to each message transmitted. Nodes receiving the messages can reconstruct the certificate as long as they successfully receive a minimum number of the transmitted messages, where the minimum number is less than the total number of messages transmitted. This allows message authentication to continue uninterrupted, even in a network environment where some messages are lost in transmission. Two different types of FEC codes are described, and adaptive schemes are included to optimize message throughput based on such network conditions as node density.

  • Publication number: 20130315057
Abstract: In a wireless and/or power line communication (PLC) network environment, techniques for multicast of data and management of multicast groups assist in regulating bandwidth consumption and provision of desired multicast data. Nodes indicate interest in multicast groups by transmission of reports upstream. Report transmission may be suppressed to balance bandwidth with need for multicast data. Multicast data packets may be retransmitted downstream to fulfill requests indicated by the reports at a rate and/or frequency based on multicast packet duplication or redundancy. Information, such as broken links or “leave” packets, may indicate that one or more downstream nodes should be removed from a forwarding state. However such removal may impact other nodes. A query may be transmitted downstream, to determine if retransmission/forwarding of multicast retransmissions should continue. Query transmission may be based on a balance between query bandwidth consumption and the needs of downstream nodes.

  • Patent number: 8593945
Abstract: A method for detecting a mismatch between a first port and a second port includes determining whether a destination address associated with the second port and a virtual local access network identifier (VID) for a service instance monitored by a first maintenance end point are included in a table of the first port. The method further includes setting a traffic field in a first continuity check message. The method additionally includes receiving, at the first maintenance end point, a second continuity check message that includes a traffic field. The method also includes detecting a mismatch when the value of the traffic field in the second continuity check message does not match the value of the traffic field in the first continuity check message.

  • Patent number: 8588059
Abstract: A system and method for protecting a received data stream. Active receivers and standby receivers are provided, each adaptable to receive a data stream on a traffic channel. Plural data processing units are operatively in communication with the receivers. At least one of the plural DPUs provides a switching signal to the receivers to switch the state of the active receiver to standby and the state of the standby receiver to active as a function of a quality measurement of the received data stream via the traffic channel.

  • Patent number: 8588060
Abstract: A method of enabling a resilient interface between a first node and a G.8032 Ethernet ring. A Link Aggregation Group (LAG) comprising respective links is provided between the first node and at least two ring nodes of the Ethernet ring. An aggregation function is instantiated at the first node, for distributing subscriber traffic to the links of the LAG in a conventional manner. A first one of the ring nodes is designated as Active, and each of the other ones of the ring nodes are designated as Inactive. At each Inactive ring node, a logical block is imposed on its respective link of the LAG, such that subscriber traffic between the first node and the Ethernet ring is routed by the aggregation function only through the respective link between the first node and the Active ring node.

Abstract: A failure protection method of a network connecting between nodes by multiple working paths and a protection path is disclosed. An allocation bandwidth is determined to allocate to a detected path where a failure is detected in multiple paths being set to the multiple working paths, depending on the detected path. The detected path is switched from one of the multiple working paths to the protection path. Data to be transmitted by the detected path is transmitted by using the allocation bandwidth determined within an entire bandwidth of the protection path.

  • Publication number: 20130294227
Abstract: Network repeaters which each implement a redundant switching function previously grasp connection states of ports of a network system by using an inquiry frame and an exchange frame. At the time when a line is broken, when actively confirming a state of a port connected to a port in which a line is broken via a downstream device, the network repeaters each grasp that which portion of the line is broken and determine whether a switchover is required. Through the process, the network repeaters each prevent a useless switchover such as switching-back immediately after the switchover, and at the same time since a mechanism of waiting for a given length of times is not required, they each perform a fast switchover.

Abstract: In one embodiment, certain SRLGs associated with members of a bundle are deemed to be “risk-free SRLGs”, i.e., SRLGs whose failure may not substantially impact the capacity of the bundle to carry traffic in a computer network. In a bandwidth unaware embodiment a number of active members of the bundle is identified for each SRLG, and a bandwidth aware embodiment further specifies an available bandwidth capacity for each SRLG to determine risk-free SRLGs. A backup path or tunnel may be established and utilized to protect a communication link as long as the SRLGs shared are deemed to be risk-free SRLGs.
